Congratulations on your move, and welcome to SimpliSafe®! At SimpliSafe®, we’re on a mission to make every home secure. That’s why we aim to make our systems the easiest part of moving so it can be the first thing you plug in once you get settled!
Below are some of the first steps you’ll need to take to get SimpliSafe® up and running in your new home.
Setting Up Your SimpliSafe® System
The SimpliSafe® Mobile App is available through the Google Play Store for Android Devices, and the App Store for iOS devices (iPhone, iPad). You’ll need to download the app to your phone or tablet to set up your system.
Please note, that your phone or tablet must be running Android 11 or greater, or iOS 16.0 and above.
To start the set up, you’ll either need to create a new SimpliSafe® account, or sign in with an existing one.
To create a new account, you’ll need a working email address, and you’ll also be required to create a strong password. Your password must meet the following requirements:
At least 8 characters
At least 3 of the following:
Lower case letters (a-z)
Upper case letters (A-Z)
Numbers (0-9)
Special characters (e.g. !@#$%^&*)
Once you have created your account, the app will prompt you to begin your system’s set up. You’ll first start by installing the Base Station. The in-app instructions will walk you through setting it up, and getting your system connected to Wi-Fi. Please note, that we do have system and Wi-Fi requirements that need to be met in order for your system to get connected to the Internet.
Our Monitoring Plans are designed to provide you with the coverage you need for your home. Whether you’re looking for camera recordings, cutting edge app features and functionality, or advanced security services like Active Guard Outdoor Protection - There’s a plan that can meet the needs of every home!
Your Master PIN is a four-digit sequence used to arm and disarm your SimpliSafe® system, and unlock any Smart Lock(s) you may have installed within your home. It’s also required to access the Keypad’s menu, to make any settings changes from it. When setting up your system, the app will prompt you to create a Master PIN.
If you opted for a monitoring plan that includes 24/7 emergency dispatch during set up, you’ll also be required to create a Safe Word. A Safe Word is a word that you set for your system that allows SimpliSafe® to verify its you when you speak with our team for support, or during an alarm event. It allows us to confirm your identity, ruling out any bad actors trying to impersonate you to gain access to your system or account.
We recommend choosing a Safe Word that is easy to remember, but isn’t easily guessible by folks around you. We typically recommend avoiding names of relatives or people in your household, or obvious phrases such as your home address.
Additionally, there are certain words that are not allowed to be used as Safe Words. This includes words or phrases that are vulgar or abusive in nature (e.g. expletives, hate speech, etc.), as well as words or phrases that could confuse our monitoring agents during an alarm (e.g. “please send help”). Any attempt to use a prohibited Safe Word will be rejected automatically.
Once your system has been set up, you’re now ready to begin adding your SimpliSafe® sensors, cameras, and Smart Lock(s) to your system. You can add products to your system using the SimpliSafe® App:
Tap on the three-bar menu in the upper left corner of the app
Select Add Device or Camera
Choose Let’s Go
Select the product you want to add from the list of available devices
Follow the in-app instructions to add the device to your system
Repeat these steps as necessary for each additional SimpliSafe® product you wish to add
Customizing Your System and Settings
The Base Station has a robust settings menu that can be adjusted within the SimpliSafe® App or using your Keypad. You can make adjustments to the system settings once your Base Station is set up. We recommend taking some time to familiarize yourself with the system settings, and tailor them to the needs of your home.
You can adjust the system settings at any time within the SimpliSafe® App:
Choose My System from the bottom navigation bar
Select Base Station Settings
Here you’ll be able to turn off the light for your Base Station, adjust the volume level for varying audio cues and the Base Station siren, and change the duration for your entry and exit delays.
Once you’ve added your Sensors or Smart Lock(s) to your system, you’re now ready to customize the device settings for each product. Settings vary by product, so be sure to check out the Help Center for individualized articles on customizing settings.
To access the Device Settings menu:
Choose My System from the bottom navigation bar
Select Device Settings from the list of menu options
Tap on the product you wish to manage
Adjust the settings, as needed
For some settings, you will be required to choose SAVE in the upper right corner of the app to save your selections before exiting
Our cameras have a lot of fantastic features that can be customized to meet the needs of different areas of your home. For example, you can set motion detection by the system’s arming state for several of our cameras, you can build activity zones to ensure that you’re only being alerted for motion events that matter to you, and so much more. Each camera has its own unique settings, so be sure to customize each one accordingly.
To access the Camera Settings menu:
Choose My System from the bottom navigation bar
Select Camera Settings from the list of menu options
Tap on the camera you wish to manage
Adjust the settings, as needed
For some settings, you may be required to choose SAVE in the upper right corner of the app to save your selections before exiting
Using Your System and Getting Support
Some police and/or fire departments may require permits for security systems and alarms. Once you have activated your SimpliSafe® Monitoring Service, the permit requirements for your municipality will be made available to you via the SimpliSafe® App or Online Account.
Some homeowner’s insurance companies may provide you a discount on your plan with them for having a home security system installed. To qualify, download a monitoring certificate from the SimpliSafe® App and contact your insurance provider.
The SimpliSafe® System has three arming states for system status; Off, Home, and Away. You can arm or disarm your system at any time using the SimpliSafe® App, Online Account, or Keypad.
If you are subscribed to a professional monitoring plan, arming your system is the only way to ensure a monitoring agent can request dispatch from emergency responders when the alarm is triggered. When the system is in Off Mode, none of your burglary sensors (i.e. Entry Sensors, Motion Sensors, or Glassbreak Sensors) will be active.
When you first activate your monitoring subscription, your system will be placed into Practice Mode, so you can get to know it better. Practice Mode lasts for 72 hours, and allows you to practice arming and disarming your system, and setting off alarms without having to worry about emergency responders being dispatched to your location.
Once you’ve exited Practice Mode, you can alternatively place your system into Test Mode to test individual sensors or components. You can enter and exit Test Mode whenever you’d like, to ensure components are working properly.
Our Help Center has a wide range of topics to help you get started with your system, use your system, and troubleshoot issues that may come up in rare cases. You can search for your inquiries using the search bar, or you can navigate by product or category to find what you’re looking for.
We have several ways for you to contact support, from 24/7 chat support to speaking with an agent over the phone during our normal business hours. Our support team is here to help you make the most out of your system, so don’t hesitate to contact us if you need additional assistance.
