What is a Safe Word?

A safe word is a word that you set for your system that allows SimpliSafe® to verify its you when you speak with our team for support or during an alarm event. It allows us to confirm your identity and system, ruling out any bad actors trying to impersonate you to gain access to your system or account.

How to Use a Safe Word

When you call or chat with customer support, you may be asked for your safe word to verify your account. This is to ensure that anyone speaking with our agents is verified to make changes to your account, such as adjusting system settings or making changes to your monitoring subscription. 

During an alarm event, you’ll also be asked for your safe word so our agents can verify that it’s you answering the phone before they take any action. Providing the wrong safe word, or no safe word at all, will result in our agents requesting dispatch from emergency services to the location of your system.

If you can’t remember your safe word, you can use the SimpliSafe® Mobile App or Web App to find it and change it at any time.

Tips for Choosing a Safe Word

A safe word should be simple to remember, but not easily guessible by folks around you. We typically recommend avoiding the names of relatives or people in your household, or obvious phrases such as your home address.

Additionally, some words are not allowed to be used as Safe Words. This includes words or phrases that are vulgar or abusive (e.g. expletives, hate speech, etc.), as well as words or phrases that could be confusing to monitoring agents during an alarm (e.g. “please send help”). An attempt to use a prohibited safe word will be rejected.

We also encourage you to change your safe word every so often as routine account maintenance. The safe word grants access to your account and system when speaking with a professional monitoring agent, so safeguard it like you would a password and only share it when absolutely necessary.
