Option to Disable Disarming when Smart Lock is unlocked

Hello. We are looking at the Smart Lock for our front door. We have read that once the pin is entered to unlock the Smart Lock, the SimpliSafe alarm system disarms. Is there a way to disable this and manually punch the codes on the main SimpliSafe keypad instead of the Smart Lock keypad? I understand that a duress pin can be used in case of emergency. Thanks for your help.

Please fix this. I will not buy the SimpliSafe door lock until you change/add this feature. What is the purpose of a security system if there is a single point of failure??? At least with manual locks they need to get through the door before being able to try to disarm the system.

I just chatted with an agent and would like to yet again request this feature. Don’t want to be asleep in my house and if someone knows my code they can enter in silently with unlocking my door AND disarming my system. Big oversight by SS. Please update this.

Is there any way to unlock Smart door lock without disarming the system ? And without using the PIN that disables the monitoring system ? I would like to give passcode to my kids who goes in/out like 50 times in a day, so that they can open door on their own without the need of Physical key, or ringing the bell every 5 minutes they keep entering the door.. And I don't want to disarm the system

Right now, there is no setting that allows the Smart Lock to be unlocked without disarming your system. This request has been submitted to our dev team for their consideration. If we get any news from them, an update will be provided in this thread.

Several people have asked for more control over disarming and unlocking with the PiNs.

I recently was surprised to learn that people I had just met once in the day and really don’t know were in my house and I didn’t find out until I happened to see a lock jam event in the timeline.

I suspect they tried to push open the door too soon after entering the code and caused the bolt to bind as the motor was moving the bolt.

I use just use one PIN, the master PIN, and my two adult sons know it.
I’m not concerned with anyone altering the system with the master code. But I *do* mind the door code disarming the system unconditionally.

The older son, who has a vacation home around the corner from me, has two teenagers who know the code as well.

So my granddaughter had some school friends staying at her family’s house and one of them had left something at my house earlier in the day. My granddaughter was taking a shower, so she gave them the PIN so they could walk over to my house and fetch the item.

Giving custom PINs to the grandkids doesn’t help the issue which is that any PiN can both open the door and turn off the alarm. Even if I ask my granddaughter not to tell their friends my door (and alarm) code, they might see her entering it or where she wrote it down.

Also this presents an awkward situation that I explained in my other post: Namely, being put in a position of denying a door code to guests who are acquaintances because it’s also the alarm code.

My wife, who doesn’t carry a key ring, wanted a second SS Lock on our shed which is attached to the garage which is attached to the house. I said, we can’t because I don’t want having access to the shed to mean disabling the alarm for the garage and house. When a guest offers to help fetch beach chairs or patio furniture out of the shed and is asking for the door code, I really don’t want to have to say “Wait, I’ll open it”. Currently I use a metal key to open the shed door.

I suggest that a custom PIN have a parameter that says whether it should also disable the alarm.

@emily_s why would the dev team take a feature into consideration? There is a clear and definite business case for this feature. As an engineering lead myself, something like this would be pushed for by the product and business organization and prioritized within engineering; in no company would fixing this bug be dictated by engineers. This bug, disguised as a feature, is a massive safety issue and the fact that the customer concern has been blatantly disregarded says a lot about simply safe as a company. Very disappointed in this product and the organization.

Any updates on this? Sort of crazy that a home security company didn’t think that coupling the keypad entry to the security system to automatically disarm everything can be a good idea… completely defeats the purpose of the alarm.

Part 2 of this needs to be setting different codes for keypad and alarm system.

It is almost like someone is paying them to keep this bug in this system. Could be law enforcement wanting the ability to enter homes without triggering the alarm. It definitely is not normal, and their excuses are really pathetic.

I hate to double respond, but if anyone has noticed, the lock is currently out of stock on the SimpliSafe website. Wishful thinking, but might that mean they are getting to release a new model?

Here comes my tinfoil hat:

I’m sure someone knows more about the tech specs of the door lock, but I’m guessing it doesn’t allow firmware updates so short admitting their design flaw, SimpliSafe sat on this one for a minute so when the release a new lock, it doesn’t appear that it was in response to the flawed design of the old one.

@derekpender90 on the contrary, the Smart Lock does support firmware updates. We've had two so far. If you have one available, you should see a card in the Overview page of the SimpliSafe app.

This particular request is more on the server side. If there's ever any movement, we'll make sure you're updated here.

This is definitely a major flaw in the design and huge security risk. I want to be able to choose how my key fobs, door locks, and alarm system respond and react. We purchased 2 door locks and 2 key fobs and after installing the first lock, we have never installed the second or activated the key fobs. I wish I knew before we replaced our previous keypad lock. Please fix this issue soon.

Coming to echo others’ comments… the Smart Lock is not useful in its current state with it automatically turning off the alarm. There are times (for example, when my cleaning lady comes over) when I want to let someone in, but I don’t want them to be able to get in anytime they want… by giving them the door code but not the alarm code, I have more control over access to my home. I also want assurance that someone looking over my shoulder at my door PIN can’t use that to have easy access to the house without the alarm going off. And I want the ability to put different codes on different doors - this way, for example, I can let someone enter my garage but not my home. It’s very surprising that Simplisafe didn’t do a better job of thinking this through.

This lack of action for four (4) YEARS by Simplisafe is the very reason SS does not have a higher rank when ratings of different security systems are posted or published. AKA a huge failure in customer service.

I don't mean to sound like a broke record but I agree this definitely should be an option to allow the lock to "Only Unlock" and the alarm still stays on. I'd be fine with a camera turning on and capturing the action of who is entering but keeping the alarm on the entire time.

Please SimpliSafe, is there any update to this security flaw, or is this being worked on?

A few of us Architects, designers etc. that specify Simplisafe on our projects were discussing the lock and pin pad the other evening and one major question came up. This issue is when the pin pad is used to unlock the door it also disarms to system. Only one in our group did not feel that this is a security issue based on the following.

The pin pad being located on the outside of the structure allows anyone to use the code or at least try to use the code. Once they are successful they now have access to the disarmed house. One example is anyone casing someone's residence could very easily sit some distance away and watch with binoculars to see the code when you unlock your door. You leave and all they have to do is wait a few minutes use the code and they are now in your unprotected residence.

Another example is you unlock your lock with the pin and someone then pushes you inside the house do you harm.... but the alarm is off because you used the pin pad. Most of us were taught to unlock the door go in and close the door before unarming any alarm system to protect ourselves from these type of situations.

There should be a option to allow the lock to function as it does now [for owners that prefer to have this convenience over better security] as well as a setting to only unlock the lock [even if it would require a separate pin #] and leave the alarm on so these situations can't happen...... more secure residence.

All that said the locks work fine and are a great addition to any system, but a small software change for this option would greatly improve the security of the residence while still having the convenience of unlocking the door. We are all curious as to how others feel about this as well as Simplisafe.

We as a group that specify 100s of Simplisafe systems a year but found this to be a serious security issue. From the response here it looks like most end users are not concerned. Most of us have stopped specifying till we see something to allow clients to be more secure when unlocking a door. We like the system and feel it is a great value to the end user except for this issue.

It sounds like you want a lock thats NOT tied into the alarm system so wouldn't it be easier to just buy another brand lock to compliment your SS system?

That is a possibility but you then loose a lot of the app features relative to the lock. We find it is always better to not mix manufacturers on many systems including security. This should be a simple software fix allowing the lock to function either way.
