More PINs

Hey-love the system. Unbelievably great.
Just need more pins. Have bought fobs to supliment- but really- just get more pins available.
Thanks- great product!

Why is there a limit to custom pins?  I don’t care for speculation or conjecture. I would like SS to answer the question for its members.

I use SS at 4 of my small businesses. This is a “business-unfriendly” practice.

Hi @gladestreetllc,

The system was designed to only support four Custom PINs. We know that some users would like to have more, and that request has been submitted to our dev team. Once we hear back from them, an update will be provided in this thread.

In the meantime, the main workaround here would be to give your employees a Key Fob so they can arm and disarm the system without their own Custom PIN.

Agreed, as a Senior, I have a large immediate family that needs to quickly access my residence. Hopefully this gets addressed quickly. I have need of closer to 12 PINs. This was a primary reason for purchasing SS equipment.

I have a small business and limiting pins to 4 really restricts the number of employees that I want to track regarding access to my place of business. I need at least 8  custom pins. Simplisafe is  not business-friendly and seems to be focused only on the home market despite their advertising.

Same here...
I have 2 warehouses and can not track employee access by individual, which is very important.
Come on @Simplisafe ........    Lets get this update!!!! 😉
We love the system, just need more pins

It’s been long enough. SimpliSafe simply does not want our business. That’s very clear now.

I will move all four of my businesses away from SimpliSafe by the end of the summer.

I will move both of my homes away from SimpliSafe immediately, shutting both down today.

Goodbye SS.

The SimpliSafe marketing has long touted being able to have PINs for family members, dog walkers, care givers, service people, etc.

The ability to have permanent PINs for each family member is important - parents can confirm when a child or spouse disarms the system with their own PIN - thus, that they have arrived home safely. The ability to add PINs for additional guests or workers without compromising the permanent family PIN numbers is very important.

Please consider updating the array of PINs that can be utilized. (Our prior service, Guardian Alarm, allowed 20 PINs.)

Other than this one issue, SimpliSafe is fantastic!

Thanks!

Adding to this request. We are underway with major renovations on our home and have multiple contractors that need regular access - several more than 4. Please advance this enhancement request.

Dear developers, is there any way you could add capability for more custom PINs? My wife and son and I use three of the four currently allowed. This leaves only one, which has to be shared among everyone else who needs access to the house.

But doesn't this make logging kind of pointless? You know, let's say my brother, the cleaning service, the bathroom tile guy who comes and goes, and two drywall guys we used four years ago all share a custom PIN called "Other." How do I tell who disarmed the system at 10:16 AM? The log just says Other.

The only workaround I could think of was to keep changing the shared PIN and then making everyone who uses it memorize a new one. Or does anyone have any suggestions?

If I had known this when I bought the system, I wouldn't have. I'm still within the 60 day trial and seriously may cancel and return the whole order. It is ridiculous that this has been a request for over 6 years and hasn't been added yet. That shows me exactly what kind of support I'm going to get from SS.... Not impressed.....

Agree on needing more PINs and current max of 4 does not work when competitors are enabling 100+ PINs to customize/maintain easily in their apps.  Struggling with why this feature is still so limiting today.

1 Message

Unbelievable that SS has not addressed this issue.  Am I limited to 4 employees? Do we have an update - has SS heard back from their developers yet?

I'll throw my hat into the ring as well. This is such an obvious needed feature that it's actually embarrassing the SimpliSafe hasn't updated the 4 PIN maximum over the years.

I use this system with my photography studio and send out temporary codes often. Only having 4 PINs to choose from is very limiting.

Obviously, from all of these messages, SimpliSafe has no intention on making their product better or even responding as to why there is a PIN limit. Oh well.

I also find it very frustrating that SS hasn't addressed this PIN issue. Our club definitely needs more than just 4 PIN numbers to be able to identify who is coming and going.

All of the other features of the system are very easy for the majority of the users to understand and use.

Reposting this feature request.  WE NEED MORE PINS.  I am using this system for our office and I need to give each employee a separate pin.  I have a couple of employees that have to share a pin and this is a security issue.  I will consider switching my security plan to the RING system if we can't get this feature soon.

I am a developer and this feature is not difficult. People have been asking for it for years. You advertise as a security system for "business" which is one major reason I chose you over Cove or other systems. As a business I have multiple employees and this is a feature that I had assumed, wrongfully, that would not have a limit or be so astronomically high it would not matter. I have less than 20 employees but I would like to know who is turning off the alarm rather than just "Barista". Please let me know when I and the rest of the community can expect to see this feature implemented. If your developers can't do it then call me and I'll get it done for you!

It certainly does seem like a simple "ask" unless there is a hard memory issue with the system. Can't imaging a password table consuming much.

I'm just setting up my Alarm system and found I can only have 4 pins.

Well I'm a family of 4 people, so that's 4 pins all gone before I think about neighbours, dog walkers etc.

How the hell do I allow more people to be able to arm and disarm my alarm?? AND no sharing a pin is not a solution!

@m0guy First, welcome to the community.  More than 4 would be nice, and has been requested for years, but there are ways to  work around this. Do a search and you will see multiple threads with suggested solutions.  For our family, our kids (okay, grown adults) share one, two neighbors share one, the fire dept has one encrypted in the dispatch system so they don't have to axe down our front door if they come and that leaves one spare that we rotate, if necessary, to others.

Again, while it would be nice, there are many other things I would like SS to work on first before this.

I'm buying a security system to help protect the most expensive thing I've ever bought which in turn is protecting my other possessions, I shouldn't have to compromise on that security.

Sharing PIN codes is not a solution. Do you share your laptop password?, Netflix account? the pin code to your bank cards? NO so why share the PIN to your house.

If you share the PIN changing it becomes a real pain as now everyone whose legitimately shared needs to remember the new number, it's not going to be something everyone finds memorable.

What happens if someone else reshares the pin code now it's to a wider group. But your auditing of who's using the PINs is not valid to identify who unset the alarm.

Using the "Master Code" to unset (Giving you 5 PINs) is also not the answer, just like with a computer you don't login with Administrator account, instead you promote yourself to admin when needed and revert back.

If you do have to give out your PIN and you only have the master code you've suddenly given someone else FULL control of your alarm system.

You might as well put the number of a bit of paper above the control Pad..

Adding more pins is not difficult. Back in the '80's it might have been a memory issue restricting the number of pins but not today.

Key Fobs are just WRONG in all accounts. If I lose my keys with the Key Fob on them then anyone picking up those keys can disarm and enter my house without any further effort, totally negating the alarm system.

Hi @m0guy,

The SimpliSafe system currently allows for one Master PIN which allows you to disarm your system and control its settings, as well as 4 Custom PINs to disarm your system only.

As Captain11 said, we have submitted a request to our devs to add more PINs to the system. And when we have any news from them we will let everyone know over in this thread.

I need at least 12 PINs for my business. I can't switch over to your system until that is available and it is very disappointing to find this out after I bought the equipment.

@captain11 Shouldn't it be like a very simple code fix?   If it can accept 4, it could probably accept 99 without any sweat.

I'm not a developer, so I could not be seeing something, but 4 is a very low number it seems, and does not really seem to be something that can't be resolved with one simple line of code (if that).  Unless for some reason they hard-coded 4 custom pins all over the place in the code set, and now it is a QA or hardware problem more than a coding problem.

I see no technical reason for only 4 custom pins.  What am I missing?

Also, since they started out as a rental/apartment model, perhaps they thought there would never be a need for more than 4 -- if they were only dealing with urban apartments?

I too really need more PINs for our business. Here is the challenge that SS needs to overcome, maybe this helps explain to everyone. With only 4 digit PINs, having 1000 supported would mean that a thief would have 1 in 10 probability of punching the right number to disarm.

SS needs to make PINs at least 5 or better 6 digits to keep them random enough. With that, user experience might suffer for those who will struggle to remember 6 numbers. So PIN size needs to be configurable. All totally doable but takes a bit of effort as long as the hardware can support it.

I agree that longer PINs should be supported, but even raising the number to 8 or 16 (0.08%/0.16% chance of hitting one randomly) would be a huge improvement. If they've somehow created hardware and software which make this difficult, they've designed the system very poorly (professional software engineer here). This sort of thing makes SimpliSafe feel archaic; I won't buy a system from this company again and I won't recommend them to anyone else (rather will warn against them wherever I can).
