Battery Charging with Power Cable

I have been sent several replacement cameras and batteries because my battery will not stay charged even though it is connected to Simplisafe's power cable and charger. I have never gotten any push back from Simplisafe when asking for a replacement but no replacement has fixed the problem.

Are there other users that have or have had this problem? If so, was it resolved and how?

Hi @dankelly736,

When you plug the charging cable into your Outdoor Camera, do you see any indication in the mobile app that the camera is charging? In the Cameras page of the app, there should be a lightning bolt next to the battery to indicate that it's charging. If replacing the camera has not helped, a replacement power cable may be the solution.

Having the exact problems. They rep sending new cables and batteries. They work the first time then

nothing. Right now my outdoor battery has been charging for hrs. The app shows that it has not moved.  So disgusted!

@sportsmom5709 Just to confirm, you are using the 25ft Power Cable to charge the Outdoor Camera's battery?

If the mobile app doesn't show any change in the camera's battery, we would want to check the outlet it is plugged into and the power cable itself. I would recommend plugging something else into the power outlet like a phone charger to make sure it is working properly.

If the outlet is working, the next step would be to ensure that the power cable is securely plugged into the Outdoor Camera. I would recommend unplugging it and then plug it back it, making sure that the cable has been pushed in all the way so it is flush to the camera.

Yes, my SimpliSafe batteries will not hold a charge either. They replaced all of them previously, but I’m having the same issue which is once they get low and I try to charge them they don’t hold a charge.

I ordered a plug in power supply from Amazon. It’s the UYODM Power Cable. It’s been installed since mid September 2023 and my battery is still at 100%. SimpliSafe’s plug in power supply would not keep the battery charged.

@pwg112 are you talking about the battery for the SimpliSafe Wireless Outdoor Camera? It comes with a short USB-micro cable, but not a power brick. Sometimes the power brick you've paired with the cable isn't able to supply enough power, though I've seen rare cases where the power cable itself was faulty as well.

As @dankelly736 suggests, trying a different USB-micro cable and power adapter can help with troubleshooting - you might already have spares at home.

I have the original outdoor battery plus I bought a new one. My app says the battery is low and will not power the camera. I charge the batteries until all 3 lights are on. I put the battery in and informed battery is low and needs to be charged. I am  frustrated with this.

@twbj82 Just to confirm, is the battery properly seated into the Outdoor Camera? When putting the battery into the camera, the three gold circles on the battery should be facing up and match the three gold prongs inside the camera's battery slot. The battery tab should also be outwards, facing you.

After inserting the battery, secure the lens to the camera by twisting it clockwise until you hear it click into place and can no longer move.

If the battery is properly seated, I would then recommend connecting with our Support team for further troubleshooting.

My cameras did the same thing until one day i removed the camera because it suddenly showed offline.  The power cable melted the camera port. The camera is now unusable.  Remove these cables if you have one installed.  Or else you may find your home in ashes. Why Simplisafe hasn't recalled these cables i am clueless.

@chipperledbetter This absolutely should not happen when the power cable is plugged into the Outdoor Camera and this it something we would want to replace ASAP. I've escalated your case details to our Specialist team - a senior agent will call you soon for further assistance.

Ive had all 5 of my cameras that had to be replaced with new cables.  In fact, I just put a new cable on another one and it is still not charging!!

SimpliSafe stepped up and made things right.  They called me to discuss the issues.  Then they sent me a replacement camera as well as the cable.  So far no repeat issues.  I did return the burned up cable and camara so they could investigate the issue.  Had it not been for other reported cases, I would have just assumed this was an isolated case.  But it definitely appears the cable may be the issue.  If I start noticing the new cable or my other cable starting to have the same issues, I will just go wireless until its resolved.  Certainly dont want to damage another camera or worse.  Hopefully their team will get into it further and find a resolution.  Certainly should start with the cables.

Same issue with my outdoor camera. Will not charge. I told Customer Service that the USB cable plug-in to the camera shows signs of excessive heat but CS decided to send replacement battery as first step. This has not resolved the "no-charging" issue. Next step should be replacement camera, cable, and power supply from what I'm gathering on this thread?

Since they sent me a replacement camera and power supply, I am not certain of the cause.  But I would definitely start with the power supply cable.  I have not had any issues since I have installed all the replacements.  I would have thought in either case this would have been resolved by now and Simplisafe sent out a recall on whatever caused the issue.  Since the battery did nothing I would call them back and request a new power supply cable.

@dabrandt22 Since the replacement battery didn't help, and your camera shows signs of damage, we would certainly want to replace that camera and the power cable for good measure. Our Support team can help can help send that out.

Same here mine does not keep my camera charged either spoke with customer support today and they told me I still have to take the battery out and charge it every 3 months 🙄 so what’s the point of buying this if I still have to climb a ladder to get the battery out I thought that would solve this problem.  Their next suggestion was to buy an extra battery to keep charged.  The solar panel o jave keeps my other camera charged so I am not sure this support person knew what they were talking about

@ronkits59 Is your Outdoor Camera plugged into the Power Cable, or is it plugged into the Solar Panel?

The Power Cable should continuously charge your camera, but the Solar Panel will only top off the camera's battery - it isn't designed to charge the battery from 0 to 100. Before plugging the Solar Panel into your Outdoor Camera, we do recommend fully charging the camera's battery.

But if you are experiencing this issue with the Power Cable, we would recommend making sure that the outlet it is plugged into is working properly by plugging your phone, or something similar, into it. We also recommend making sure that the Power Cable is plugged in all the way so that it's flush to the camera.

I just installed a series 2 camera today with the power cable that was supplied by SimpliSafe. I had charged the battery to 80% via USB prior to installation. Everything is seated properly and I know the outlet is good because it’s GFI and I just unplugged the Nest cam that was previously installed. It will not charge above 80%. The battery level is not going down which tells me the cable works, but the battery is not charging.

@eak3rd It sounds like there may be an issue with the battery itself. Please reach out to our Support team, as we may need to send you a new battery.

Same problem here. I was looking for a fix.

I wound up having to pull the battery, change it up to 100% externally and then reset the camera and then added it back to the system. It’s worked since then.

@edoerle55 If you check the camera's battery percentage in the SimpliSafe® mobile app, do you see a lightning bolt icon? This icon indicates that the camera's battery is charging. You can check this by going to My System > Camera Settings and then see if the icon is present.

If the icon is not there, that would indicate that the camera is not getting power from the cable. In that case, check to make sure that the power cable is plugged into the camera all the way. The cable should be completely flush to the camera. We also recommend making sure that the outlet is working by plugging another device into it, like a phone. But if the outlet is working and the power cable is plugged into the camera all the way, that may indicate an issue with the power cable itself. If so, our Support team can help you with obtaining a new one.

If you do see the charging icon, but the camera is not staying fully charged at all times, it could be that the camera is using power quicker than the power cable can replenish it. We usually see this when the camera is constantly recording motion or livestreaming. If you see the Maximizing Battery Life of the Wireless Outdoor Security Camera article in the Help Center, it will take you through tips and tricks to prevent the camera from detecting excess motion.

My battery only stays charged about 4 to 5 days.

I had the same problem. I had a spare battery so I traded out batteries until I had the time to deal with it. First, the battery should charge when the cable is plugged in. It is recommended that charger cable be plugged in to its own outlet, not a power strip or multi-plug. So I did all this and my battery still wouldn’t charge. That’s when I contacted “Help and Support “. They went through every little thing that could possibly cause the problem. I don’t know if they were able to do something on their end but after contacting them it started charging to 100%. It has stayed charged to 100% ever since I contacted them. Good luck.

@Oteb8178 Edoerle55 provided some great tips. When using the Power Cable to keep the Outdoor Camera charged, the battery still needs to be in the camera; and we don't recommend plugging any SimpliSafe® device into power strip or a plug that can be turned on/off with a switch in case it gets turned off accidentally.

If you go to Camera Settings in the SimpliSafe® Online Account, do you see a lightning bolt icon on the camera's battery indicator? If you see the icon, that means that the battery is charging, but if you do not see the icon, that means that the camera isn't getting a charge.

If you do see the charging icon, but your camera's battery isn't staying charged, it could be that the device is using up power quicker than it can be replenished. This generally happens if the camera is in a high traffic area where it keeps recording, multiple Secret Alerts are triggered a day, or the camera is often livestreamed. If you check out the Maximizing the Battery Life of the Wireless Outdoor Security Camera article in the Help Center, it will walk you through settings and camera placements to minimize the amount of motion it detects.

However, if you don't see an indicator that the camera's battery is charging through the Power Cable, we would want to check the following:

  • Is the Power Cable plugged into the camera all the way? You'll know it's completely plugged in when it's flush to the camera. To ensure a water-tight seal, it can take some light force to plug in the Power Cable all the way, so we recommend pushing it in with both thumbs, if possible
  • Is the outlet that the Power Cable is plugged into working properly? It can help to quickly plug another device into the outlet, like a phone, and see if it starts charging. If the other device does charge, but your Outdoor Camera still does not, that could indicate an issue with the Power Cable. In that case, please reach out to our Support team for further assistance.

I have the solar panel but then had to switch to the actual cord. It is plugged into an actual outlet now and it won't charge. I am losing my patience with this camera.

@astellers05 Is the Power Cable plugged into the Outdoor Camera all the way? You may need to use some light force to push in the cable, using both thumbs if possible. You'll know that the Power Cable is plugged in all the way once its flush to the camera. But if it is plugged in completely, that may indicate an issue with the cable itself. In that case, please reach out to our Support team for further assistance.

There is diffently a issus with the power cords and the charging bricks or as I call the wall charger a charger!

when I plug my outside camera with the battery inserted in it to my laptop with the little disgusting 6 and 3/4 in. charger cord or USB cord or what ever you call it my camera lightening bolt shows the battery is at 100 % fully charged!

when I use a wall charger from simpli safe and one of the cord 25 footers or even a 16 foot cord my outside camera battery show 69% to 57 % charged? I have used 3 maybe 4 differnt chargers and cables I have that were sent from SS with other past orders!

I am a DIY red neck fixer upper after Im done fooling with all the so called Qualified Technicians  every place uses to tell you how to fix something and they can't turn on a light switch! Thats right !

obvisiouly there is a problem with SS chargers and or charging cords ( cables) !

I am taking the advice from

dankelly736 and order the cords and charger from Amazon says fixed the problem I have checked every possible cords with three different ones Ive received fro SS over  the yeaars. The battery is powering the camera without any power charger connected. My 120 out lets are fully functional I've had a qualified tech check it three ways ! (ME) If that works I'd suggest SS hire dankelly736! It appears to me SS is wasting money sending out cables chargers and batteries to replace the ones people are have issues with when SS should sit down and work out the problems ! Wake up SS you aren't fixing the problem You are hoping they just go away! o by the way the cables I have tried  work with my other SS equipment and so does the wall sharger or power brick! Hello Amazon! If the Amazon product fix my problem I'll send the bill to SS! and a wonderul day to you all!

  • I ordered this cable and charger from Amazon and it is what I needed. after researching this problem for hours and days after I fixed the problem from using information off the community form I like a blind hog finding acorns  run across on a SS site with the fix , they have the cord and charger for sell but finding the information is a NIGHTMARE from SS.          Amazon. It’s the UYODM Power Cable
  • SS site is not a friendly site for information as I believe it should or could be and getting the right Tech I can understand is a BIG problem!  as for security I rank SS a 10. for getting the correct information their sites is for sales!
  • will I stay will SS? Yes it isn't perfect but over all It is good!  I'm satisfied now everything is working as need be!
  • Nothing wrong with battery  it needs the correct charger for the outdoor camera!!!

We had the same issue. We had to keep changing the battery for one of our outside cameras.

For one of the cameras, the battery remained charged with the outside power cord coming inside the house.  It shows black meaning its working with the power cord.

The other outside camera, however; would not cooperate. We had to keep changing the battery. This particular battery never turned black as the other  camera did, but finally after several months with this problem, we called SimpliSafe again.

This time SimpliSafe had us remove the camera showing the battery blue to see if it would change to black when swapped out with the camera battery showing black. It did not. We replaced the camera back showing the battery as black. It went to blue at first. SimpliSafe check their system, and then it went back to black.

We placed the camera showing the battery as blue back to it's place. Not sure if this made the difference or not or if this was the problem, but it was difficult getting that outside connection to the camera plugged back in for some reason. Finally, we got it plugged in and what do you know, the battery finally turned black! Check to make sure the outside connection is "completely" plugged in the camera properly. Hope it works for you.

We had the same issue. We had to keep changing the battery out for one of our outside cameras because it would not hold a charge even with the power cable cord. It did however, work for the other outside camera. The battery remained charged with the power cable cord with  the battery showing black instead of blue indicating the power cord worked with it.

We called SimpliSafe. They had us remove the outside camera showing the blue battery to see if it would change to black when swapped out with the other outside camera  showing a black battery. It did not change. We replaced the cameras back to their original places. The camera that showed the battery as black at first turned to blue. SimpliSafe check their system, and then it went back to black.

When we replaced the other camera showing the battery as blue back to it's place, it was difficult getting the power cable cord connection to the camera plugged back in for some reason. Finally, we got it plugged in and what do you know, the battery finally turned black! It is now working with the power cable cord. Check to make sure the outside connection is "completely flushed" when plugging it into the camera properly. That could be the problem. Hope it works out for you.
