Voice prompts / announcements are cut off / incomplete

My base station does not always announce the complete voice prompts when arming home and when announcing the various sensor names in test mode.  For example, I'll press "Home" on the keypad, and the base station will say something like "Sim..." or "Simplisafe" or even just "Sss" instead of the full announcement which is "Simplisafe On, Home."  When in test mode, it'll say something like "Master..." instead of "Master Bedroom, Motion Sensor."  The completeness of the announcements vary.  Strange thing is when I arm using the app, so far the announcements have been complete.  I have the latest firmware updated one week ago.

Anyone else having the same issue?

This issue has been resolved as of Base Station firmware 2.14. If you are experiencing this issue, please update your Base Station to the latest version.

Yep. Started about a week ago.

Alarm...Simply... Please...

As with others, if I use the app it completes the whole announcement.

I started having this problem about 6 weeks ago. I doubt that it was caused by a battery problem, as I had replaced the battery on the keypad about 2 months before the problem started. If I used my iPhone to make the setting, all of the voice responses on the base unit were normal. If I used the keypad, the voice responses were clipped off, usually after just a syllable. I initially tried adjusting the base station volume, and for the first few settings, the voice response was normal. But the next day, it was back to clipped responses. Finally, about a week ago, I reset my wifi settings on the keypad. I had not changed my wifi password, so I just entered the same password that I had been using all along. After saving the wifi settings, I tried the keypad commands again, and everything worked perfectly and that has continued for the past week. So, at least in my case, redoing the wifi settings has completely fixed the problem.

@derrald That seemed like what fixed it for me also.

Same here. Voice prompts interrupted

Try the procedure I outlined above. It will likely work for you too.

Everyone - reconnect your keypad to your wifi (re-choose your wifi and re-enter your password), that fixed it. @derrald commented that a couple days ago, so I tried it, and it worked.

@arzhanovdan That worked!!! Thank you! Can I go back to my original wi-fi network?

@georginekacz As long as your original wifi network is still functioning and shows up as an alternative on your keypad, just select it, enter its password, and the functionality should be fine.

Yes it appears as though that works fine.

I tried connecting our base station to Wi-Fi again through the keypad as suggested above, and in very limited testing, it did appear that the voice prompts worked properly again.  I then disconnected the Wi-Fi connection (keypad settings, forget network), and the voice prompts started getting cut off again.

I normally have Wi-Fi disconnected and use cellular as primary because I noticed during testing that alarm alerts would arrive delayed to our phones when I simulated a burglar cutting our internet cable outside (by disconnected the ethernet cable from our modem to our router) and then triggering the alarm by opening a door.

It appears that the SS system doesn't immediately recognize a loss of home internet (not a loss of Wi-Fi), and it takes a while before it switches over to its cellular backup, resulting in delayed alerts.  This type of delay can be avoided if I disconnect the system from Wi-Fi and use only the cellular connection.  But then I get truncated voice prompts.  Oddly, my previous SS3 system running the same September dated firmware, using cellular connection only, did not have this issue with the voice prompts.  The previous system had only a few sensors enrolled, while the current one has around 25.

Ideally, it would be great if the Simplisafe system would transition from home internet to cellular immediately and seamlessly, like smartphones do.  Or perhaps, the engineers can program the base station to send alerts simultaneously using both the wi-fi and cellular connections.  That way, there is redundancy and no delay if the wired internet has been cut/disconnected.

@Boring_Joe I have observed the same thing concerning the loss of internet service for any reason as opposed to loss of wifi network. Did you do any tests to try to determine the length of the delay before the internet loss is detected? How long of a delay before an intrusion would be reported if the intruder first cut the internet line outside?

@Boring_Joe That's interesting, Joe. I decided to disconnect my wireless access point from the router by just removing the ethernet cable that feeds the signal to it. So, my wifi signal is still broadcast but there is no internet service. Then, starting within about 30 seconds from disconnecting, I put the keypad through several cycles of alarm off and on. All voice responses each time were still perfect.

Update 90 minutes after disconnecting from internet: From the "Off" position, I entered "Home" and got only one syllable on the base station: "Sim." So, I hit the "Off" button, entered my PIN, and got a full response from the base station. I went through 3 more cycles of this "Off" and "Home" procedure. All gave me the full voice response on the base station. I have posted this detail in hope that it will assist the engineers who are reportedly working on a solution. I am now plugging my ethernet cable back into my wireless access point. I will post a further update if the faulty responses resume.

@garychance If I recall correctly, as I did the testing a while ago, it was a delay of at least a minute or two. I hope to get some time to test again this weekend.

Same issue as everyone else- cutoff voice prompts.  Just installed the 1/15 software update and still having issue.

Last week after a power outage, my system would not connect to the internet. Contacted tech support about the issue. I had to remove one battery from the keypad and remove one battery from the base station. Then plug in my base station without the battery. I had to wait one minute. I put the batteries back in and plugged in my base station and internet issue AND voice prompts issue was resolved. Tech support said that doing this refreshed the base station and the keypad. Hope this helps.

@jsun I tried this idea, reset the base (in fact I changed the battery backup altogether) and prompts are completing again.  Will see if this fixes permanently.

@MinneapolisJeff base unit reboot with battery removal seems to be holding steady as a fix, issue has not reappeared

Just got keypad update 2.10.6 about 10 minutes ago. Does this update fix the voice and door chime issues?

Hi @SimplyGuy,

Our tech team is currently working on a solution to fix these incomplete voice prompts.

We've found that it might help to do a Base Station reset with a couple of extra steps:

  1. Remove the power plug from the Base Station, which will reveal the security screw.
  2. Unscrew the security screw using a Philips head screwdriver.
  3. Twist the entire bottom panel counter-clockwise, and pull away to open the battery compartment.
  4. Take out one battery. This will fully power down the Base Station.
  5. Wait 3 minutes with the Base Station fully powered down.
  6. Reinsert the battery and reassemble the Base Station.

Once the Base Station has fully booted up, try arming and disarming your system again through the Keypad. The voice prompts should be restored.

Hi @jpcapuano1,

It sounds like you're experiencing a known issue regarding the Base Station's voice prompts, so I've moved your comment to this thread. Our engineers are currently investigating this to find a solution, but so far they've found that the following steps have been helpful to restart voice prompts:

I spoke with the customer service folks who walked me through the reset that I had already done 3 times.  They ultimately decided the base station was faulty and are sending me a new one.

Same thing- started happening this month. When arming in home it’s saying “simply” or “simplisafe” and in away it just says “please”. Annoying. Seems like I’m always having to do hard resets on something with this system. Afraid if I do one to the base station it’ll somehow mess up a camera.

Hi @Mjohn88,

If you reset your Base Station, it won't impact any of the cameras on your system.
