Sensor testing

I just wanted to pass along a mistake I made in testing my sensors.  Several of my window sensors were not being recognized by the tower and were also not blinking the blue light when I opened the windows.  We discovered that you have to open the window at least 6" past the sensor for it to blink and be recognized by the tower.  I layed awake at night worrying about this for several days until my husband started looking into it and figured it out.  Hope this helps someone else from going crazy.

Is this with the new system or the old?  My old system does not behave that way.

I think that is a problem.  6" is enough to get an arm into, which could enable the sensor to be disabled (tape a magnet to it).

6" is a lot! I would assume this post refers to SS3 as my SS2 only allows about 1-1/2 to 2" before the light flashes. Could you perhaps increase the distance between the magnet and the sensor to lesson the distance before activation?

Attention captain. Can u confirm this with ss3?

Hello captain.  Any comments on this?

@dp, I did not, and do not, experience this with my SS3 system.  The entry sensor tolerances were the same as SS2.  While I am at work now, I wanted to be 110% sure before posting and called my wife.  Asked her to get my tape measure and open our kitchen door slowly until the blue light flashed, stop and measure the gap.  The measurement the 3 times she did it (sorry but she was going to hang up on me if I asked for more reps) was approximately 1.25 to 1.50 inches.

I can do more testing tonight on separate windows but I doubt it will make a difference.

@djjfish, can you provide additional information? (location, composition of windows, doors - metal, wood etc).

And now for me to whine, here is where the SS representative, actively monitoring the forums, will step in at this key time and provide their expertise.......:-)

lol @Captain11......I'm sure "Chad" has seen a huge spike to the bottom line since you and a few others have taken over Tech Support! Oh and "their expertise"......possibly no response=no expertise and perhaps their waiting for the ss3 manual too.

Thanks rsgilbert but I do think SS dev team has done a great job on SS3. Now if only the support resources can catch up...

Thanks cap, had me slightly worried.  I wonder why so many people post strange things like this and never come back.  Some times I wonder if they are fake posts designed to scare people from buying SS.

I am with you, sometimes a post looks like its off the wall or you suspect where they are coming from. I know I have been accused several times of being a SS employee, and don't believe me until they read one of my rants....like not enough support resouces.  I trust you have been in the same boat.  Possibly there are issues with this particular install, and why I asked for additonal information.

@Captain11, I believe the accusation is shill not an employee...and those sprinkled rants are simply misdirections.

@djjfish, how are your window sensors aligned?  6" is pretty far apart and those magnets are not very strong.

I can also confirm that my entry sensors all trigger within 1.25 - 1.5 inches of separation.

Six inches seems a little extreme.

@djjfish

Thank you for posting about this! I see that you've also sent us an email to start troubleshooting this. I'll make sure someone gets back to you and help you sort this out!

@Michelle, welcome back to the forums! Very promising to see SS Support active here so early in the day.  Looks like support levels are getting back to where they should be.

The 3 extra sensors I ordered after the main order showed up on Saturday.  Decided to look at them at least and I can also confirm that they appear to trigger within an inch or so.  According to the light anyways.  The rest of the system has not yet showed up.  Figured I'd pass that info along.  The sensors are definitely smaller, Ill give ya that.

@drunkpenguin , anything had to be smaller than the old ones! :-)  BTW, I can assure you it ain't no six inches to set off the alarm.
