Manually set event recording times for Cameras

How can we set the recording time? Why can’t it be as long as we are watching or until we stop the manual recording? I was monitoring and then recording an intruder and the recording stopped just as their face would have been visible.

@mmbeggs thanks for the feedback! That kind of manual control isn't available yet but I've created a new thread for your request. If anyone else thinks this is great idea, be sure to 'upvote' on the top left!

Mine only records for 1 minute and 5 seconds

I get recordings on the web site that are stamped 1 minute and 5 seconds but can only watch 10 seconds or so if I view the event recording on the Simplisafe app.

A pre event buffet feature would be safer.

Work needed here please, Simplisafe devs.

@davey_d Two years later and still no option to extend recordings.  Seems like a pretty reasonable request.

@davey_d I would love an update on this as it’s been 2 years since it was initially posted. I would also love to control how long the recording goes for

@davey_d My max time of recorded events is 13 seconds.  That minimal amount of time seems to defeat the purpose of having cameras to record "events" vs snippets or tiny fragments of the happenings.

I think this would be a great option to have!

I agree. My dog was in the compound and i was watching how he was getting out. The camera stopped after 1min 5 sec. The next recording started and he was already out!

The outdoor camera needs to record ENTIRE events ! That’s the whole reason for a security system! Simpli Safe needs to rectify this or be transparent about this problem to consumers before they purchase

Agreed.

My camera records for 10 seconds then stops.

If I had known in advance you put a 10 second record time on the system, I would have looked for something else.

Definitely would like that option. Record time should be set by customer.

Absolutely!!!!

Completely agree.

Agree. Added charge for extra Recording space could be considered for customers that demand long term storage but the base feature should be at least as good as Ring.

@jhstroh I think the issue is with SS. Recordings take up space in the cloud. I think we pay enough money we should have more storage for recordings. Storage is cheap!!!

Yeah, someone in my neighborhood has been kicking over my trash can after it's been emptied each Tuesday.  It's not the collection truck as I've seen it set it back down okay.  I want to catch the guy on a recording, but I can't set to record the entire day, so I have to watch the live feed and hope I can hit the record button in time to get him.

@LEMJMcC have you already tried People Only Mode? It should trigger a recording for any person coming into view.

It's not a problem starting the recording, the problem is that the recording doesn't record long enough.

Does SimpliSafe understand the needs of their customers?

I also believe the recording time should be determined by the owner

@pabs44 Absolutely, I agree. Most of my recordings at the back of my house are only 13 secs long. It's not much longer at the front of the house.

Ditto…. My recordings are about as long as the 4 …. above

Everytime one of my cameras start to record, it cuts off in around 2 minutes.  We need to be able to set the recording time to whatever works for us.  Getting half of a video when someone is breaking into your car kind of defeats the purpose of having a camera.

7 Messages

@afcdolphins how are you getting 2 minutes recording time? I only get 13 seconds

2 Messages

@socalschlegels The app only allows about 10 seconds or so at my location. The web site allows a longer view time. Improving the performance is a Simplisafe development issue.

This is a no brainer! Due to the delay in the start of recording, a person can run directly past the camera, trigger a recording yet not be included on the recording!!

Great point!!!

Why hasn’t this been fixed yet

This is an essential and basic “feature” that needs to be added. The cameras trigger a recording but never capture what I need then to because they always stop recording far too soon. I have 10 cameras that are almost useless because I can’t tell them to record for a minimum of 2 no tires. We need to be able to specify “When motion is detected on camera x, record for a minimum of x second/minutes”. Come on SimpliSafe, this is basic stuff!

I agree this feature needs to be added. My camera records 13 seconds max. Not enough time to catch an event as it unfolds.

Yes please! This function is long overdue!
Let us at least choose how long we want our recordings to be.

I also need longer recording times. I have the system inside my business and need to have it record longer since it doesn't seem to pick up any motion after the initial recording. It should record continuously as there is always motion, but alas. I only get recordings when it feels like it.

Absolutely useless it doesn’t record long enough, you would think that this is a basic feature. Expensive and poorly made

My outdoor cameras will often stop recording too early.  For example when a package is delivered it will often record the person approaching the front door and leaving the package but stop recording before they walk away.

It would be nice if I could manually set the camera to record for XX time (30, 60, 90 seconds) once the motion is detected.  As this would result in more helpful recordings versus SimpleSafe/the camera determining when to stop recording (which often cuts out a good portion of video).

Thankfully thus far I have not really needed any of the videos BUT from what I have seen it seems that if/when I do need a video.......it will likely not capture what I will need to see.

@saab90089 Your feature request sounded very similar to this thread, so I've gone ahead and merged it here. At this time, there is no setting to change how long the camera records for, this this idea has been passed along to our dev team. Once we hear any news from them, we'll let you all know.

Yes, my thread is very similar to this one - thank you for merging it.  Does SimpliSafe have any sort of feedback on these requests?

I realize that there should be a max limit (say no more than 5 minutes) but I don't think those of us on this thread are making unreasonable requests for set recording times.  Perhaps offer 30seconds, 1min, 2min, 3min, 5min.  Could even make a sliding bar from .5min through 5min.

When I execute a Manual Recording I need it to last as Long as I WANT it to last! Is this Possible?
