Possible sale of SimpliSafe: Stay on mission!

Amazing is the word that comes to mind when you look at the history, growth and success of SimpliSafe that started in a kitchen of Mr and Mrs. Laurans not so long ago to the large security company that it is today.  Hedge fund owner today has not deterred SS from its core mission to provide the best overall security solution out there (at least in my opinion.)  Now, there seems a bit of a chance that an ownership change is in the works.

Interesting read via article below. I do hope SimpliSafe stays on mission....

GTCR weighs bid for Hellman & Friedman’s SimpliSafe

US buyout firm GTCR is exploring a potential acquisition of residential security company SimpliSafe, currently owned by Hellman & Friedman, according to a report by Bloomberg citing unnamed people familiar with the matter.

GTCR is in discussions with HPS Investment Partners for approximately $1.2bn in financing to support a possible deal, with other direct lending firms expected to participate. The company could be valued at roughly $2.5 billion including debt, according to Bloomberg’s sources.

SimpliSafe was acquired by Hellman & Friedman in 2018, and in 2022 a consortium led by Capital One Financial Corp. provided over $200m of additional financing to support growth and refinance debt.

Negotiations remain preliminary, and terms or financing arrangements could change, while other bidders may emerge. Representatives for GTCR, Hellman & Friedman, HPS, and SimpliSafe declined to comment.

I suspected as much.

H&F is doing similar with their big EU version, Verisure, going public, IPO, to clear some debt presumably.

SimpliSafe’s tech is already in the “sunset phase" and doubful due to cost to catch up to others anytime soon, if ever.

1080p is pathetic compared to even $25 to $35 at 2.5k camera. RF is also pathetic in comparison to Zigbee or Zwave LR.

Even Wyze has a 4k camera now. Didn't buy one but they have it. Bought a Reolink 4k WiFi to test though and replaced one of seven Simplisafe outdoor cameras, so far.

You could almost feel change coming here on the forum with what seemed like one admin & slowly pasting the typical canned respones for the last two plus years.

Particularly, the last few months reading here offline and shaking my head, even chuckled a few times.

If as you say, they stay on mission, without any new innovation, which cost money, it will not last with their current technology.

Word of mouth gets around and eventually bites you in the butt.

GTCR is coming in, if they come in, for cash flow, monitoring fees is about all Simplisafe has to offer, currently.

Without investment in new products, they're living on borrowed time. IMHO

Their hardware is ancient and slow.

Although you and few others claim it works for you if USB battery charging is employed. All battery cameras brands are slow. But you're still at the mercy of their cloud. Compared to what is still unknown.

Same no compatibility issues will probably remain for the future.

The best route for actual security is Power over Ethernet cameras that record to NVR for 24/7 coverage. 4k to 12k and better is available now, zoom, Ai that actually works better. Tracking, tagging, rich notifications, etc etc.

Zigbee or Zwave sensors that can't be hacked as easily and offer massive compatibility options and no interference hassles.

The least, cameras that accept SD cards for 24/7 recording, or can be tied into other systems for storage, have actual time stamps so that it might actually hold up in court.

You are wise to keep an eye on it as change develops.

I'll observe developments from the sidelines.

Welcome back dipsr! SImpliSafe remains a front line contender and product of choice for me for residential security, but it does have to step up product development to remain there.  The innovative and industry leading Active Guard service provides a layer of protection at a price point no one can currently touch (but can still be improved with customer configuration options.) Huge product gaps however, like garage door sensors, IoT connectivity, water shutoff, natural gas sensors, multiple frequency jam resistant capabilities, digital wireless doorbell etc highlight the inability of SS to develop and release market demanding products in a timely manner.

At this point SS is the leader in cost effective, performance based security. Again, if the acquisition does or doesn't go through,, SS must stay on mission.  With continuous improvement,  Eliminate what is not necessary, innovate what you can and must and what remains, automate what you must.

@captain11 We shall see, and not according to the guy who's car was broken into with super monitoring. 😉

They may plant a new CEO and people, H&F got in at the right time and did little.

This new outfit is coming in late, if they do their research, they'll pass. I would.

We'll see, time will tell.

Generally speaking PE buys into companies for one of two reasons:

- They plan to strip it for parts, make a quick buck and get out with little to no concern for the future of the business

- They plan to invest in, grow and improve the value of the company and  eventually flip it for a much bigger payout than the first option

It seems, after a relatively brief Google search, that GTRC is more likely to fall into the second category but time will tell. Even if they do there's no guarantee that we'll see improvements at a consumer level.

I would, as always, LOVE to be wrong. I desperately hope I am and they (or anyone, really) comes in and addresses the littany of issues and requests that I've seen repeated here and on Reddit for so many years now.
