Outdoor Camera Battery Drains Quickly

The outdoor camera battery is advertised as "Lasts up to 3-6 months before it needs a recharge." with the caveat, "Battery life may vary depending on usage, placement and settings." I bought my camera in mid-July 2022 and I've replaced the battery 3 times since then (now mid-October 2022, 3 months). The camera is indoors (in a lobby), so it is not exposed to extreme temperatures; it also times out frequently so it is not running constantly.

Any recommendations to extend the battery life would be very much appreciated. It's a huge hassle to pull out the ladder every month when I thought the battery should last 3-6 times as long!

From reading this thread, the outdoor camera issue has been ongoing for quite some time and, despite assurances that the battery issue and related setting changes/dev suggestions were being looked at, nothing has been done.

It seems pretty obvious that Simplisafe is not going to do anything about their subpar outdoor camera.

Bottom line is they want you to buy the charging cable or solar panel.

I found someone comment on how charging for over 12 hours corrected the short life issue and I tried it. That for me worked. After I charged mine over 12 hours (not just when battery indicator light showed full which is the trap not explained) mine was still at over 90% after 10 days so I am good with mine. Try that and see. I still opted for the charge cable as I had a power outlet available and at 76 I just wanted to eliminate the charge process completely.

@stephenkboothe I bought an extra battery and the solar piece. I haven’t installed the solar part yet, but my camera is set to the lowest settings without turning it off and my battery was drained in a week. I have to call someone to come and help me change the battery because I can’t reach the camera myself and it’s very annoying that I have to do it so often. I’m starting to think Simplisafe was not the option I should have chosen for home security.

@smithsquared The Outdoor Camera's Solar Panel will certainly help to top off the camera's battery and keep it changed. How many motion events does your camera receive a day? The battery should last anywhere from 3-6 months, but if it gets more than 10 motion events a day that can impact its battery life.

I know you have some motion detection settings turned on, but it can also help to enable Activity Zones to stop the camera from detecting motion in certain areas. If you haven't set up Activity Zones already, doing so can help to prolong the life of the camera's battery.

I have had the same issue with my outdoor camera since I installed it earlier this year. For the first 6 months, it required a recharge every 25-30 days. I thought that was strange and the battery should last longer but continued recharging every month. Then 2 months back, the battery went from 100% (after an overnight recharge) to 0% in 2-3 days. I called SS support and was asked to change the camera settings to lower sensitivity, etc. I did all that. Note this is a low motion area. Even after lowering all settings, the battery died within 2-3 days. I wish I had read through these support posts before purchasing the SS system. Given the issues with my doorbell video camera and this OD camera, SS seems useless in monitoring and helping secure my home.

Given that so many customers have reported similar issues for over a year and SS has not fixed the issues with their hardware, I am nearly decided to purchase a second OD video camera and trash my SS system and move to a competitor. Cannot afford to take the risk of monitoring and alert failures.

@preeti59 The Outdoor Camera certainly should not lose its entire charge within 2 or 3 days, especially if it is in a area that doesn't see much motion. To rule out if this is a hardware issue with your camera, I would recommend reaching out to our Support team for a replacement.

Absolutely correct. 3 to 6 months is a huge window. You would assume default being up to 6 and max settings up to 3. False claims in my opinion and experience. 3 to 4 weeks maybe

Absolutely true. 3 to 6 months is a big window. That being said. You would assume 3 being max settings and 6 being default as they suggest would increase battery life. I have no subscription and settings may as well be off. Minimal security and features. Battery technology is amazingly advanced overall.  These are not. Camera and system only as good as the batteries. My opinion. False claim

@fastestramair The 3-6 month estimate is based off the camera's default configurations, and when installed facing a typical yard. Results may vary based on the settings on your camera and how many motion events it detects a day. If it is facing a high traffic area that picks up on more than 10 motion events a day, that can impact the camera's battery life.

@alstarwalt You can change the Outdoor Camera's settings in the SimpliSafe mobile app by navigating to the "Cameras" tab on the bottom of the screen > tap the gear icon in the top right corner > select [your camera] > Motion Detection. From there, you can change the camera's sensitivity, motion detection type, and set up Activity Zones. In this Help Center article, we discuss the camera settings to maximize its battery life.

I just live that for every person who posts Simplisafe says...must be your environment! Lol. No. It's your product. My backyard battery has drained in 5 days from my dogs going out. Thumbs down .

Has support just given up on finding a fix for this? This has been ongoing since the Beta where it's clear there is a total lack of quality control when testing firmware before releasing to the public.

@msites106 Our engineers have made some improvements on the Outdoor Camera's battery life with recent firmware updates, but we're not stopping there! They are going to continue working on the Outdoor Camera to improve its battery life.

We do also list out troubleshooting steps to take to maximize the Outdoor Camera's battery over in this Help Center article.

With all the trouble I’ve had with terrible battery life and cameras going offline, I just hope my panic buttons work if I ever need them. I have three buttons and zero faith now. Constantly recharging the batteries on default settings.

I bought the power cords to plug in outside outlet, keeps the battery charge

I bought a power cord to plug in a outside outlet outlets ,keeps the battery charged

Right outside power cord to plugging it outside outlet works fine. Keep the battery charged.

I find the outdoor camera battery life to be pitiful, at best. They gave me a solar panel to help keep the charge up. That helped for a while, but it seems to no longer be helping, and I am back to low battery alerts after a 2-3 weeks. This is on an enclosed back porch, with little traffic.

@CharlesKn We first recommend wiping off the Solar Panel using a damp paper towel. This can help clear off any dust/debris on the panel that could prevent it from charging the camera. Also, is the Solar Panel in a location where it gets at least 3 hours of direct sunlight a day? If it does not get enough light, that can impact how much it charges the camera.

The number of motion events that the camera records is not the only factor that will impact the camera's battery life. Do you have any sensors set to Secret Alert? Whenever a Secret Alert is triggered all of your cameras will record. If multiple Secret Alerts go off every day, that can bring down the camera's battery. This is also true for livestreaming events. If the camera is constantly waking up to livestream, that will cause its battery to drain quickly.

I wish I would have read all these comments before installing SimpliSafe. Have had their service for a month and my first set of batteries lasted one week! They sent me a second set which also seems to be draining after 2 days. Now they are sending me solar. I’m too was told batteries would last 4 or 5 months. It seems to be misrepresentation to claim months of battery life when in fact it’s days or one week.
Their only saving grace is good customer service when you speak to US. I am very dissatisfied and concerned because battery will die if I travel which is when I need to have alarm.

@ileanahernandezacosta The life of the Outdoor Camera's battery is dependent on how active the camera is. The 3-6 month estimate is based on the camera's default settings when setup in a typical backyard. But if the camera is facing a busy street, or your system has multiple Secret Alert events a day, that can cause its battery to deplete quicker since the camera is constantly waking up to record.

But we see that our Support team is sending you a Solar Panel. This will top off the camera's battery to keep it charged.
