Deadbolt not retracting

installing my smart lock and noticing the thumb turn doesn’t go a full 180 degrees. Is this by design?

when I manually engage the deadbolt and then try to retract it, about 1/2” stays exposed so the door can’t be opened. This appears to be because the thumb turn doesn’t go the full 180.

anyone run into this?
