Choosy recording

I literally watched someone walk past my camera and the camera did not record movement. It happens all the time…what if it decides not to record a viral moment??

Hi @virnunstevens ,

The Captain is correct. It does depend on which camera you're talking about, as that changes the advice we'd give slightly.

But it's useful to know that for all cameras, the built-in motion sensors work best when the subject is moving across the field of view. That is, your camera should pick you up best if you're moving sideways across the view, as opposed to moving towards the camera itself. So it's best to set up and angle the camera so that they're more likely to walk across view.

Also, the built-in motion sensor does have a limited field of view. The camera image can "see" much more than the motion sensor, which is designed to pick up intruders much closer and below to the unit itself. So you'll want to keep that in mind when positioning as well.

@virnunstevens I am guessing you are talking about the doorbell pro or the outdoor camera. I have both and record fine. Suggest you call SS Support and troubleshoot to see what the underlying issue is. If you get a chance please post your outcome here. Thank you.

Im embarrassed to say that im just seeing this response a year later!! lol! It’s the indoor camera. And it still does the same thing. I can see someone come OUT of the room but it doesn’t record them going IN! But it shows ppl go in the room at different times. The last recording could be at 2pm with someone walking past the door. And the very next recording is at 5pm with someone different walking OUT of the door. We never see when they entered.

@virnunstevens Thank you for these details! Approximately how far away do you estimate that movement occurs from the camera? The SimpliCam Wired Indoor Security Camera has a 15-foot range for motion detection. If movement is occurring slightly farther than 15 feet away, it can impact the camera's motion detection.

And as Davey previously mentioned, the camera's motion sensor is most sensitive to lateral motion. It can help to mount the camera in a location where it is looking at the side of the area you want to monitor; that way subjects move across its field of view instead of coming at it straight on.

Also, the SimpliCam relies on its WiFi connection in order to begin recording. We recommend using the Connection Check tool in the SimpliSafe mobile app to check the camera's connection to its network. If you see the How to Troubleshoot Your Camera's Connection article in the Help Center, it will take you through the steps of using the Connection Check tool and will provide insight into what your results mean.
