MATTER: Why this standards effort "matters" for the future of Smart Home...and Simplisafe

Below is a link to an excellent article on the MATTER initiative and how (at least in theory) they are attempting to have  IoT devices work together. More significantly is that Simplisafe is a member of the group. One can only speculate, and hope, what this means for the future product direction of Simplisafe.

What do you think that future may hold? What do you think of the chances of MATTER succeeding and delivering on its goals? And,  directly to you SS, where are those webinars and other interactive features for your new deluxe, Gucci online community? Here is one topic I believe would be very popular on the site. How about a date for your first interactive event? :-)  Simplisafe, my security solution for over 10 years, best in the industry!!! Keep going, don't stand still!!!

Matter Smart Home Integration

I consider this really important in getting my wife to jump the technology broom and embrace whole home automation. We are both very frustrated by piecemeal solutions.

Please, SimpliSafe, embrace the matter standard. You have a good product, we like it, now help us integrate with the other good products out there. Please.

For me it won't matter, too old 😉, but for the future and young folks, it might make some things happen.

@captain11 As you might be aware I'm into Home Assistant, they have embraced matter & thread etc.

My HA Zigbee dongle already does these things. Home assistant has started the open home foundation, ESPHome, Esp32 devices etc. I have not messed with Matter it as its still Beta in HA. I might though.

I think its still in its infancy and has a ways to go. Cost will be a factor. For instance I can buy an Aqara entry sensor that does matter over thread right now on Amazon. One for about $30.

I can get three Zigbee entry sensors for $43.

Z-wave sensors are also more expensive, and not as prevalent in choices, but catching up.

I think there will be some ecosystems issues still to jump over, for a while probably. Lack of cooperation. Greed.

As to SS, my guess is not in the near future. Being a non participating member doesn't mean much to me.

Examples;

The parallel security system for redundancy I put together already does many things people ask for here. DIY

Can be local to LAN or with cloud devices.

Does cameras, Reolink, Unifi etc. With the right equipment and horsepower.

Door open reminders, auto arm and disarm, at my time schedule. Daytime armed Home automatically, sensors I never open armed, Night all sensors armed, less motion in living Quarters. Away, all armed including all of my Zigbee motion sensors. Etc. All DIY.

Auto switches based on time. Still testing. I test everything thoroughly now and lengthy tests. DIY

If alarm is tripped, light up my emergency lights I setup. Small test, 4 smart bulbs. Still WiFi cloud at the moment.

The keypad, ironically is a Ring V2 Z-Wave.

Built in siren, (not very loud) Motion lights, speaks, arming countdown LED lights, lithium rechargeable, muti user pins via HA alarm integration. Etc Etc. Etc. Skys the limit. HA is open source, software is free. Integrations are user supplied and free, donations accepted, lol. DIY integration via GUI or directly programmed in YAML.

When I walk into the bedroom, lamp lights up via a motion sensor.

At 10 PM goes into night light mode at 20 percent light on a time schedule. It's on before my feet hit the floor. Motion sensor also. Same setup in the basement oil room, motion activated smart bulb.

Here's some things SS might do now if willing, so far not willing. Make sensor polling time faster and/or allow some integration and API's.

The SS sensors show up in home assistant so they're already exposed to a degree. They also cross over to Alexa and Google Home, home assistant is compatible with both of those. Has its own voice assistant local only also.

Currently SS polling time is variable depending on when polled 1 to 20 or 30 seconds to know if an SS sensor opened to use with automations, not very useful, and so Zigbee. Not related to SS RF signals to base.

I personally don't see many canned security systems changing real fast from any supplier.

The sales models across the industry are inexpensive equipment, high percentages off, and the real money comes from monitoring and "retention". Multiply just 1 million x $31.99 for an average. Or some are even higher. They, meaning all security suppliers will either change or suffer the consequences, down the road.

Though there'll be a market probably for quite some time yet.

For me, as long as my SS base and sensors operate, I'll use it for redundancy, two is better than one in case of failure or hacking. Something will wake us up.

SS Cameras will be scrapped as/if they fail, but in recent firmware I have sensed "some" improvement. Some mind you, still inconsistent though. No one calls anymore, no one seems to care to know.

I'll fiddle with Matter, but not very much.

I'm happy at the level I'm at and even I have knowledge and abilities limitations with technology.🤔😂 But, I'm game to try new products and software. Opinion only, you asked. Lol Long winded as usual.
