Outdoor Camera Delay

Hello Community,

This thread was initially created as a gathering point for our Community’s feedback regarding the performance of the Wireless Outdoor Camera. Since then, our engineering team has been working hard and making significant improvements, making your Outdoor Cams faster and more reliable than ever.

For best performance, it is still important to make sure that your Outdoor Camera is in the best position for connectivity - not just with your WiFi router, but also with your Base Station. Our Help Center can take you through some troubleshooting steps. And you might also want to consider enabling Performance Mode by plugging your Outdoor Camera into a power source - either the Power Adapter or the Solar Panel accessory. Not only will that enable your Outdoor Camera to stay online at all times, but also enables pre-roll, so the recording can catch events even before the camera is triggered.

Going forward, we’ll be tracking more specific issues as they arise. So while we’re going to mark this particular thread as RESOLVED, please rest assured that work continues and more updates with improvements and optimizations are on the way.

Still takes way too long for the SimpliSafe outdoor camera to wake-up and record, often not recording at all as it misses the event entirely. Occurrences such as someone driving up onto the driveway with the electric fence opening,  or a package being delivered. Very disappointing!! It's on battery with solar backup.  Very disappointing!! I have a Ring camera on another property of mine that never misses an event.

@lanishban When the Outdoor Camera isn't in use, it enters a deep sleep to help preserve its battery life. To wake up and begin recording, the Outdoor Camera relies on its connection to the Base Station, so bringing the Base Station a little closer to the camera can help prevent recording delays.

It's almost insulting to suggest relocating a camera closer to the router would help.  The majority in this thread have cameras near the router.  I have two within a dozen feet from the router.  Mounted on the house.  Still only get the heels of people walking nearby.

I do applaud your efforts and I am hopeful that the edits will awaken from "deep sleep" within a second or less.

Thank you

I switched to Arlo solar/battery system.  Still has a little lag but is consistent and works.

I now appear to be running v1.20 which hasn’t even been announced yet and the delay is still as bad. Utterly useless security camera.

Alright, it's time for me to buy new cameras from a different service. I can't believe I wasted this much money on these cameras. SimpliSafe should recall all the exterior cameras. I just contacted customer service again and they're just sending me on a wild goose chase again. They essentially just told me, sure go ahead to a different service when I asked if I could get a refund for my exterior cameras since I've been having issues constantly and they have logs for it. They're like.. nope, not if it's not within the 60-day window. So they're completely ok with taking my money and not backing up their service.

Yes the exterior camera is useless. I never have this problem with my ring system.

@lanishban Agreed. I was considering Ring, but now Amazon owns them. They had some issues in the past with people looking at security camera feeds. I probably won't go with them.

I have been saying that simpliunsafe is a fraud for a long time. Just look up my posts to see what I had to go through. I'm still shocked that people are still buying their junk.

@larrhurd yeah, back to the drawing board and researching alternatives. Dont want Arlo or Ring.

I HATE my SimpliSafe cameras.   I have too much invested in the cameras to just ditch them and go elsewhere.   I too have called about them, but get nowhere.   My old system (other than 2 of the 4 cameras dying of old age and the same with the doorbell, rarely failed and when a person came to the door it told me "Person" not just "motion".   These are like a person crying Wolf.   I've turned off all notices as that is a waste of time.  But the slow response in trying to wake the cameras up is unacceptable.    I do not feel protected.     I do really like my SimpliSafe alarm and when my old doorbell went out, I decide to go with SimpliSafe for that and then all the cameras since of of my front exteior cameras went out.  This way the alarm & camera are all on 1 system.   What a HUGE mistake.   The doorbell camera doesn't have near the range as my former Next doorbell.   I needed 2 cameras to get that but don't know if it is a person or just a car passing or whatever.  The other cameras overlap and really only need 2 front cameras.   But the install took too long  to be able to see it all as I kept getting "bad" cameras.   The installers couldn't or wouldn't answer my questions about "range".   I miss my old cameras.

Hi @numbersplus09 ,

We're really sorry to hear about your experience. Please know that our engineering team is constantly at work on improving performance for your cameras. It sounds like you have two different types of camera: the Video Doorbell Pro and the Wireless Outdoor Camera. Since they each use very different technology, it's important to troubleshoot them separately. We do have a general guide here that can help with both.

For the Outdoor Cameras, it's not only important to have a good connection to your WiFi router, but also to the Base Station - because it's the Base Station that tells your cameras to wake up from Deep Sleep. So it may help to move your Base Station closer to the cameras - for example, nearer to your front door (though not right next to the door; preferably away from immediate view of intruders walking in).

Another factor is that the Outdoor Camera's Deep Sleep goes into effect to save battery life. If it's connected to a power source (like the Power Adapter, or the Solar Panel accessory), it will stay awake, and should react faster when there's an event.

And finally, to answer your question about motion sensor range. Unfortunately, we're not able to give precise numbers because they work using infrared - that is, they're activated by sources of heat moving around in the scene. Then if you have People Only enabled, the camera will analyze the image and look for anything shaped like a person.

But that heat sensing means that the range will differ greatly depending on the environment. So the best thing to do is to test it out where you want it, and that's how you'll know for sure.

This is a horrible issue, and I have had my system for 2 years now and I have 2 extenders and this still occurs. Simplisafe has to do better! Like others has said, you miss what triggered the camera in the first place whenever this happens. And it happens far too often! Even when you hit the notification sometimes it won't load smh.

@jfmdegra12 sorry to hear that you're still having trouble. It might help to consider that you're not just dealing with the WiFi connection, but also the radio connection to the SimpliSafe Base Station. To save battery, the camera goes into a deep sleep, and it's actually the Base Station that tells it to wake up when there's an event. So we'll need to troubleshoot that connection for better response times.

You might also want to consider plugging your Outdoor Camera into a power source - either a Power Adapter to AC, or the Solar Panel. That will enable Performance Mode, meaning that the camera won't go into the deep sleep at all, and would be much faster.

All of my outdoor cameras have solar power.

@jfmdegra12 ah, that's good to hear, but not great that it's not able to help. How far are these cameras from where your Base Station is located, and is there anything in between? Like any walls or appliances directly in the way? Could it be possible to move your Base Station closer to where the cameras are?

You might even want to test with one of your cameras in the same room as the Base Station. If you no longer get the severe lag, then we'll know for sure it's a Base Station range issue.
