Keychain Remote Becoming Obsolete - SS2 Users Out of Luck

More bad news for SimpliSafe 2 users (you know, customers who bought way back in Dec. 2017): the keychain remote is being phased out and obsolete. Customer support acknowledges that it just doesn't work and won't be supported much longer. So, if you don't pay for the monthly monitoring, pretty soon you will have no way of changing you PIN settings without a time-consuming call to customer support. And of course, this isn't considered a warranty defect, just a "technology problem," so no replacement keychain and no upgrade to the new SimpliSafe 3 unless you buy it at full cost (which is ridiculous, since the hardware has to be a loss leader versus the monthly subscription). Basically customers prior to January 2018 don't matter to this company. Take your money elsewhere.

@sfrelocation, past history has shown that a support rep at SS can, and does, often provide the wrong (or partially wrong) information.  Not their fault entirely due to the training and notorious non existent communication policy of SS.

Asking SS to officially respond to this one. Thanks!

It makes sense though, the USB keychain remote is pretty terrible and only seems to work on windows systems with the firewall turned off. If you have an existing keychain remote it should continue to work (if you can get it working). It's not like they'll remotely disable the USB port, they probably just won't provide support if someone calls in complaining that it doesn't work. I'd imagine they'd just make whatever changes the customer wants while on the phone if someone calls in asking for help.

I really think SS has to come up with some sort of upgrade plan. I also am a relatively new SS Customer(Under a year) and still have alot of time left on my warranty. If we are already running into these "Technology Problems" now on the old system just months after the SS3 launch imagine the issues there will be in the old technology 2 years from now? And since the new system is out they likely wont be putting any effort into correcting bugs or other "technology problems" for the old systems.

They can't remotely update the old systems, so there isn't much they can do to correct bugs after the fact. If you have a system failure you should be able to get warranty coverage for the failed components within the time limit.

Just FYI, there are people still using the SS1 system that shipped from 2008-2012, so you should get a lot of life out of your system beyond the warranty period if you don't see a need to upgrade it.

The "Wizard" is software, stored in a rewritable memory (USB stick).  So it COULD be updated, but probably won't be, because all resources are likely to be focused on the new system.  But it CAN be refreshed if it becomes corrupted.  So if you use it, you can continue to use it the same, with the same support you've always had.  If you don't use it, then it doesn't make any difference.
