Nest Protect smoke alarm

We have a couple Nest Protect smoke detectors, but not the Nest thermostat. It looks like the Nest integration w/SS3 only works through the thermostat. Is that correct? If it's possible, it would be cool to get a notification through ss if my smoke alarm goes off.
