Using SimpliSafe with app and without service, is that possible

I have a new system and want to know if I can use it without the service and get alerts on my smartphone.

I am new to SimpliSafe and may not necessarily need the service if I can get alerts to my iPhone.

No.  The alerts come from SS, and in order for SS to get the signal to send an alert, you have to have the interactive monitoring plan.
