Can the Smart Lock be used without installing the external pin pad?

I would like to install a Smart Lock on a secondary door, to make sure it is always automatically locked when we set the alarm on.
However I do not want to install the external pin pad. I assume it is possible however I thought I could ask here.

I just received my first Smart Lock. I had it installed for a few days without the external PIN pad. It works fine that way and you can lock/unlock it will the app. The lock will automatically lock when you arm your alarm and you can set it to lock after a specified amount of time as well.
