Smartphone app without subscription?

Hello all, considering buying into SS but wanted some confirmation re: functionality.  I don't want 24/7 call center monitoring ala ADT, but would want to be able to control/monitor myself via smartphone.  Do I have this ability without paying SS a monthly fee?  I.e. can I get push alerts to my phone without the subscription?

Basic App Control is available for all users in the United States, even without a subscription. As long as your system is connected to WiFi, you'll be able to arm/disarm your system remotely, receive notifications for alarms, and even view 7 days of Timeline events. For more info, check out the Help Center Article here.

Hi @Worthing,

Yes! With or without monitoring, you can set up notifications to your phone when an alarm is triggered.

@harriet_c how do you set this up? In the app it just gives me two options, both paid monitoring systems.

YES, some explanation would be helpful Simplisafe team. The is no reason one should not get notifications and be able to turn on and off their system remotely (control all aspects of they system through the app) without the paid monitoring. It’s a scam if they claim the app can’t work without the monitoring since plenty of systems DO work without monitoring. Costumers need to be given control over the systems they purchase so they can set up a system that works best for their individual needs!

I’ve just installed the system without prescription. For this it acts as a stand alone system i.e via the motion sensors it will detect an intruders and set off an alarm just as conventional alarms do. Setting up the outdoor and indoor cameras, when going on app, press ‘set up cameras’ option and not ‘set up system’. If you click on set up system, it will ask to to click on one of the prescriptions. Setting up just the cameras on app, it allows to see live coverage of anyone coming into your property. It will allow you to speak and set off light or night vision. The app will send you notifications of when the cameras are activated by a presence. This is the same for the indoor camera also. Hope this clarifies it a little clearer.

Without monitoring, Simplisafe app is useless! If I own equipments, I should be able to use the app!

@anjaney in case you missed the other replies in this thread, Basic App Control is available for all users, even without a subscription. As long as your system is connected to WiFi, you'll be able to arm/disarm your system remotely, receive notifications for alarms, and even view 7 days of Timeline events.

To get started, just go through the activation process in the app, and refuse the free month of service.

Though we do still recommend giving Interactive Monitoring a try. Not only would you get 24/7 dispatch, but also cellular backup and unlimited recordings for all your cameras, all for just $@27.99, no contract!

@davey_d  I just purchased simply safe to use without monitoring

I can not get past the subscription page on the app when setting it up. There is no option to decline any packages. I am a Uk customer. Is it not possible to use the app in the Uk without a subscription?
If so I will take it all down and return for a refund as it wound have been miss sold.

@davey_d does this apply in UK too?  I just ordered the system and a load of additional sensors, but like others i would argue a smart alarm with no alarm notifications that you can’t arm and disarm remotely is certainly not smart, in fact I would say it is a chocolate teapot!  Why would it be available in US but not UK?  Does SimpliSafe just want to rip off UK customers?  If so this UK customer will turn the packages around and go with Ring!

Hi @robdayuk

Yes, UK have the Basic App Plan too. As long as your system is connected to WiFi and your Base Station is paired to your App, you'll be able to arm/disarm your system remotely, receive notifications for alarms, and even view 7 days of Timeline events.
If you want to find out more about what features the Basic App plan have vs Professionally Monitored plans, you can schedule a call here: https://spr.ly/61216eprgp and speak to one of our experts.

I would not say useless, you still get push alerts from your sensors including window, door, motion, smoke, CO, water etc. as such you you will know if something is triggered. You get live viewing on cameras, but no history and timeline. You would of course have to call the police or emergency services yourself. Yes I agree monitoring is far better, but w/o its not useless, just not as capable.

@jrc645

ONLY IN THE US.

If you are in the UK you get no notifications at all. I found this out the hard way and it's really really annoying. I would have returned but I couldn't be bothered to take everything down.

It is not clear there is a difference between US and the UK.

I am based in the UK and here Simplisafe does not provide the mobile alerts and app arm/disarm functionality without a Pro Premium subscription at £24.99 per month.

Seems UK customers are being taken for a ride.

@paulslinger thanks. I’ll take it down and return. There are others providers that do provide this function without a subscription. It is not clear that it is a difference with the US

I’ve just unboxed my new system in the UK, expecting to be able to arm/disarm without monitoring.

Customer support said to trial the subscription based service, changes to the UK plan may occur in the future.
60 day return policy, unsure whether to just box up and return or trial the subscription service, cancel after 30 days and return before 60 days

@chrisfujak I had exactly the same dilemma.

It is really poor that turning alarm on and off and getting notifications of alarm is not possible without paying for monitoring.

In the US they do now offer these functions without a subscription soit is possible they may enable in the UK.

However, I think it needs enough people to return their systems for this reason before they will be forced to change.

All others DIY alarms such as Ring, Abode and Yale include these functions.

did you return yours @paulslinger

may just cut my losses and return without setting up any equipment and go with another system

Simplysafe don’t have alert or notifications for events like motion or entry sensor with basic app plan. It requires minimum $9.99 plan to get that. I would not have purchased simplisafe if this is known at that time.

Literally can’t even edit your existing devices from app or site. “Devices” is even greyed out with a lock next to it since I cancelled monitoring. Scam artists. Advertised as something with optional monitoring and cant even remove a device without paying $10 a month. Wish I could undo the decision to try them. Ring is a much better product, better service, CHEAPER if you do choose to have monitoring, and cams are included in the monitoring price. Or you can only pay to have camera recording access.

I paid for basic monitoring in order to record the videos. If you're asleep when somebody breaks in you won't see any video of the crime when you awaken.

This morning I noticed that one of the movement alarms was triggered. There was a recording of a mouse. However, I didn't get an emailed notification and I thought that I had set them all up correctly, because I get emails of it being armed and disarmed when I visit the remote property.

@edisenberg Did you not get an email that an alarm was triggered, or that the camera detected motion? You should not get emails when cameras detect motion, but you should get emails when an alarm is triggered.

I would check to ensure that you have opted in to receive email alerts for alarms in the SimpliSafe mobile app. This can be done by navigating to My System > Alerts & Notifications > select Email. From there, check to make sure that Alarm notifications have been enabled.

Something to consider, if you don't pay for a monitoring plan you can't cancel an alarm (even a false alarm) from the app anymore. The alarm will continue to sound until you physically go onsite to cancel it.
