Cell vs. WIFI as primary

I just upgraded my original SS with the new system and I noticed that it seems to default to WiFi as a primary means of contact with monitoring.  My cell service here is more reliable than the cable so I was wondering if there is a way to make the cell service the primary contact method without telling SS to "Forget" the WiFi connection?

Thanks for the help

Hi @sellersattic,

So technically, both connections work in tandem, and just whichever connection is the strongest takes over. So in your case, it seems that the Base Station thinks that your WiFi is the best connection right now. But if that changes, the cell connection will take over immediately.

@davey_d I have a vacation property with ss3 installed. I'd like to be able to put my wifi service on hold when no one is there. Can I run the system only on cell connection? Thanks

Hi @evilqueen2312 ,

The Base Station does have a built-in cell connection, that can keep the system linked with Monitoring (and the app), even when WiFi is unavailable. It's activated as part of Monitoring service, so if you're subscribed to the $17.99 Standard Plan, or the $27.99 Interactive Plan, it's already set up!

Davey_d,

Thanks for the response :) This explains it well and I now feel double covered when it comes to monitoring.  The new system is awesome, with many of the suggestions and issues with the original either fixed or added.

Thanks again!

@poham88 When installing the Base Station, it does require your Wi-Fi credentials to complete its setup. After the fact, if you're subscribed to either our Standard Monitoring or Fast Protect™ monitoring plans, the Base Station can run on its cellular backup. However, please note that the Base Station does require a Wi-Fi connection to install its firmware updates; it cannot update on its cellular backup.

I have a only a local self-monitoring plan for $10. I wish there were a way to disable the celular connection so I can stop getting “ connection lost to dispatch center” warnings which shuts down the app for some reason, which should continue to work over WiFi.

@moreliafrank The Base Station's cellular backup is activated as part of our Fast Protect™ and Standard Monitoring plans. The Self Monitoring with Camera Recordings plan does not include cellular backup, so if you are seeing a "No Link to Dispatch" error that means that your Base Station is not connected to WiFi.

If you keep seeing a "No Link to Dispatch" error, it may help to set up a 2.4GHz guest WiFi network that only your SimpliSafe devices can connect to.
