How Can I Increase Outdoor Camera Motion Activation Distance? Tried Many Variables!

Recently installed outdoor camera. Problem is motion activates camera recording at a maximum distance of only 20 feet from camera.  Camera is set up outside one end of house, to view end portion of deck, walkway, and our parking area-total distance about 80-90 feet from camera.

QUESTIONS:

1) Re SimpliSafe outside camera capability, What is maximum distance at which motion can activate recording?

2) Please review the following list of all the variables I have addressed and tested. Is there anything else for me to try?

3) Could the camera be defective?

4) Should it be replaced by SimpliSafe?

VARIABLES I’VE ADDRESSED AND TESTED:

1) Mounted 7 feet above deck;

2) Excellent image quality out to about 100 feet in live recording mode, or once a recording has been ACTIVATED by motion (motion picked up only at 20 feet or less);

3) Installed a WiFi range extender (TP-Link AC70 sold by SimpliSafe) with 2.4 GHz on, and 5GHz off);

4) Ran camera WiFi connection tests, getting Good strength (-44 to -49 dBM) and Good speed (17-18 mb/sec);

5) Tested 1080p and 720p—no difference in motion activation distance;

6) Tested medium vs. high sensitivity—no difference;

7) Using “People Only” setting.

Thoughts? Advice?

I believe the max distance is around 25 feet or so but if you want try putting it on all motion then it might be better. I have 4 of them and the one st my driveway will pick up people or cars on the road and it's about 30 feet or so away. Just remember if you have it on high sensitivity and all motion you will get alerts all day for nothing, also check the angle of the camera as it plays a big role as well. If you have the camera mounted upside down it will decrease the distance up to 50 percent

@lance843 Thanks, angle is optimum; camera not upside down; I did test all vs. people only, and medium vs. high sensitivity:  no difference in motion activation distance of 20 feet.

Hi @fschwartz72

The Outdoor Camera has a 140-degree field of view and can detect motion up to 30 ft of distance. Based on your description, it does sound like the camera is operating within expected parameters. It also looks like the camera is installed correctly based on your notes. We generally recommend 6-8 feet up, and you also have it in the original orientation so the activation distance wouldn't be decreased.

No it isn't. It's not detecting past (or even up to) 20 feet when your product specs claim it will work up to 30 feet depending on height. He's already stated that he's got the camera mounted at 7 feet which is literally dead center of the recommended 6 to 8 feet. Based on y'alls documentation and your response he should be seeing closer to 30, not less then or up to 20.

If the product is installed to your spec and isn't functioning as advertised then surely you should be able to provide a fix, a replacement camera or a refund, yes?

Thank you @worthing .  My point exactly. My original post documents every variable I have addressed and tested. If the camera is rated to respond to motion out to 30 feet but is limited to 20 feet, there needs to be a remedy. I do need a camera in this location. So, @alexandria_c , further meaningful suggestions?  Replace the camera?  Other?

@fschwartz72 I certainly understand the concern here. The camera is spec'd to detect motion up to 30 feet. There are some variables that could be a factor here, so I'd like to get you in touch with a specialist who can troubleshoot in real-time, over the phone with you. This will help us to rule out any issues with the camera itself, or environmental factors as well. I just put in a ticket on my end, so someone should be reaching out to you shortly.

Thanks for your reply. FYI, I did not receive any notification (email, etc) that you replied. I just went in and opened the page. Please have the person who contacts me first review my initial detailed post. Thanks.
