It sounds like what you'd like to do is activate Basic App Control for your system. That is, set up the ability to remotely arm and disarm, change settings, view Timeline events, and receive Push Notifications, all without the 24/7 dispatch or camera recordings.

Setting up the app shouldn't be too (if any) different with or without a subscription. What specific issues are you having trying to set it up?
