Keypad Reset/Dead Keypad

Hello,
After spending 35+ minutes on hold the fix was simple. Checked with the app and my keypad was not responding. I went to it and found it dead. Nothing would happen no matter what I pushed. Nothing on the screen. I replaced the batteries, logical enough, still dead! Pulled the batteries, checked them with a meter, all good! Solution, after 35+ on hold, pull all 4 batteries...replace only 3...IMPORTANT! you must wait 3-4 minutes  Replace the last battery and it comes right on. I asked the tech if there was a reset and she said "no"...funny this sure sound like a reset to me. I told her to put it on the website!!!

Good Luck!

Hi all,

The solution described by the original post is a simple Keypad reset. Here are the steps, for clarity:

  1. Unmount your Keypad by sliding it up, and away from the bracket.
  2. Remove all of the batteries.
  3. Wait 5 minutes to allow the power to fully flush out.
  4. Reinsert the batteries.

The Keypad should reboot, and reconnect with the Base Station shortly.

But if the above doesn't resolve your issue, we might need to go through more in-depth troubleshooting to get your Keypad back online. Please give us a call at 800-548-9508 and our Support team will take care of you.

@davey_d That doesn’t fix it, you need to do three batteries, wait & then add in the 4th

@megmc515 the trick is really just to flush out all the remaining power - which removing just one battery and waiting should do. But it's interesting that you needed to do three. Or it could just be the repeated action that did it.

Many devices have a "capacitor" which holds enough charge to maintain memory for a short time when the batteries are removed.  This keeps you from having to redo any setup required.  On the other hand, it means that you have to leave the batteries out for a while to allow this stored energy to dissipate if you want to do a "power reset".

Thank you pal2e!
Just wanted to add my comments about having a dead keypad after putting in new batteries. I went through the same frustrating exercise initially replacing the new batteries with more new batteries and looking for a reset button. A quick internet search pulled up this forum and the post from "pal2e." It worked like a charm. The entire Simplisafe system was a breeze to set up and has been trouble free from the beginning. This was my first experience with any kind of problem with Simplisafe. Hopefully, Simplisafe will do more to advise its customers about this issue and very quick resolution.

I have tried this a few times and it is not working for me. Keypad showed low batteries so I replaced them with new and now it's dead. Doesn't matter how long I leave one out. I get the lights cycling on Off, Home and Away but that's it.

Didn't work for me... at first.   The off home and away buttons do light up in sequence a couple times when I put the last battery in, but after that nothing. When I originally changed the battery the screen flickered a few times and acted quite strangely. I thought it had fuzzed out. New pack of batteries even.  Dig up my old multimeter and it turns out one of those new Rayovac's was dead as a door nail.  Tried another batch of batteries and all is well.  Lesson learned.  Don't buy cheap batteries.

@cironera Thanks for the tip.  I used a battery tester and found that I too had one battery that was completely dead.  So we both had to take an extra step.

This worked for me. I didn't have much hope since the keypad was dead even with new batteries. But I followed the instructions and only set up 3 and put in the 4th after a couple of minutes, and it worked!

Thank you so much for this tip, it worked perfectly for me! My issue was that the screen on the keypad all of a sudden lost contrast so it was functional but almost impossible to read. I followed your steps of removing all 4 batteries, waited 4 minutes and replaced 3 with freshly charged batteries. Waited another 4 minutes and replaced the fourth with a freshly charged battery and the hey presto the keypad screen was back to proper contrast and readability. Thank you again for the tip!

Just keeping the love going on this post so it continues to show up when someone searches for a "dead" keypad. Worked like a charm as soon as I waited and add the 4th battery!
