Few questions from a newbie

Hey,

I'm thinking of getting simplisafe as i've moved house and it has no alarm in place. I'm hoping to use this as a 'Dumb' alarm as i don't want to pay monthly for subscribtions and i have other smart devices in the home which will notify me about motion etc.

Hoping a few nice folk out there might be able to answer a few questions i have (and can't find answers to online)

So please assume the questions below are for a 'dumb' alarm without a subscribtion.  

App -
Do i get notifications when the alarm is tripped? -

Am i able to set/diarm the alarm remotely? -

Is there a limit to how many devices will work with the app? -


Hardware -
Are you able to switch off the light on the hub? -

How durable are the seprate outdoor alarms? - Good with cold/rain etc-

Is there battery back up in case the power is cut?

Is there any simcard etc if the internet gets disconnected?

Does Simplisafe sell an big visable outdoor alarm - Simular to this?  or is one coming soon if not?

@sneakyham15 welcome to the forums from a customer of 9+ years. Here we go with your laundry list

Yes, you can shut off sound and lights on the hub (base)

You can have up to 100 devices on one system. I have 43

Yes, there is a battery backup, up to 24 hours.

The aux alarm and outdoor camera are both water resistant. I have also entry and motion sensors in unheated garage and it has gone down to dsingle digits

WIFI first, then SIM card for wirless cell to send signal

With right plan you can arm/disarm remotely, yes notifications but suggest you call SS, go to sales and walk you through the plans, including self monitoring.

This part of the reply wasn't accurate. You do not need a paid plan of any sort to remotely control your alarm (including enable/disable) as of this June.

Also, does the backup battery really last nearly 24 hours?  I thought they tended to cut out after about 8 hours.  Or did the SS3 system fix that?

As with most estimates, the answer is going to be, "that depends". If your system doesn't have to do anything at all? Maybe. If your system is "busy" with processing tons of sensor triggers, and has to speak a lot, etc. it seems unlikely to me it would last 24 hours.

I'm super curious though so I'm going to go unplug mine right now and see how long it lasts and get back to you. :) It's 1:05AM EST right now so let's see how long before it dies. Stay tuned!

Edit: It's 11:05AM EST and I just disabled my alarm system. The audible alert told me that the "Base station backup battery is low" so I'm going to go ahead and say that, given it's been 10 hours, this wasn't going to make it to 24 hours.

Edit: I just checked again at 1:10PM EST and it was dead. Not sure when exactly it died but it was 12 hours or less.

It came to my attention recently (during a false alarm) that SimpliSafe does not respond to my alarm for 60 seconds other than to send me a text for a yes/no answer.  I was genuinely surprised that no one at the monitoring station (that I’m paying $30/mth) does anything until that time has gone by and then they call.  While I appreciate that most alarms are “false”, I have this security system because I want immediate support during a REAL BREAK-IN, not to have someone in my home for 60 seconds before my security company even cares (or even to look at the videos on my expensive SimpliSafe cameras).  When I called SimpliSafe on this, I was forwarded twice to “talk to someone who could help”.  The last one was customer service who almost literally told me it was a personal problem, told me they were transferring me and then the phone went dead.  Nice customer service.  My simplest point is that if someone is in my home and I’m the one that must call 911 why do I pay for the monitoring??  I’ve been a SimpliSafe customer for many years and have always been called immediately when my alarm goes off.  Now, during a real break in, I’m expected to log into my phone (wherever it might be) to reply to a text while a bad person is somewhere in my house.  Or wait 60 seconds for a phone call.  What happens during the first 60 seconds of a break in.  Is this really where security is going.  I would not have known this if I hadn’t wondered why no one cared to call when my (false) alarm went off.

@timmorton4It seems that the text you received was one of our Alarm Texts. During the event of an alarm, all the Primary Contacts on your account will receive a text alerting you. You then have the option to respond to the text to either cancel the alarm, or have our monitoring center request the dispatch of emergency services. 

If you respond to the text to cancel the alarm or request help, our monitoring center will end the call sequence and will not contact you. But if you do not respond to the text they will still call you. 

You can opt out of receiving Alarm Texts if you just want our monitoring center to call you. This can be done in the SimpliSafe Mobile App by following these steps:

  1. Open the SimpliSafe® Mobile App on your phone or tablet

  2. Choose My System from the navigation bar at the bottom of the app

  3. Select Alerts & Notifications

  4. Tap Alarm Triggered

  5. Scroll for SMS Alerts and toggle ON or OFF

@timmorton4​ I had the same situation or similar. And precisely why I dropped to self with cameras only, company policy versus my policy disagreement.

Only I blew a gasket and called monitoring myself and inquired why no call, rather angrily too since I'm old. Then called and downgraded, personally, you do as you wish.

On the other hand, they could call fire or police in those first few minutes if you don't answer and are fighting off a burglar.

Double edged sword. I'm not worried about it myself anymore. Might get help, might not depending on your police response.

The trick was if alarm is cancelled in a certain time, perhaps within 30 seconds, no call comes.

And I actually had the same thoughts as you, concerning calls and perps etc.

BTW, $31.99 soon, standard went up $2 as well for you monitoring folks, posted somewhere today 10 or 15 down the line of posts, or more perhaps by now. Some got emails.

When or if they raise self with cameras I guess I'm done at that point and have useless expensive cameras x7. They're not that great anyhow for security.

I don't want to read their terms and conditions again, 🙄 so I can't verify or remember if the delay is up to 30 or 60 seconds for a call.
