Using the app with multiple users

Can multiple people use the app on a phone to control a single alarm system? Do they have to set up their own account on the app? How does it know which system it is controlling?

Hi brian.kramer,

Right now, each SimpliSafe account can support a single user only. So if you want multiple people to have access to the app, you'll want them to log in under the same username (email address) and password.

Johnny M (SimpliSafe),

Is there a roadmap for SimpliSafe adding multiple user access to the app?

When I try to add support for app-based or hardware-based two-factor authentication I see this message, "Additional authentication methods coming soon!"

I'm never thrilled when a physical security company doesn't have the greatest cybersecurity. It makes me want to leave during my cancellation period.

1) use shared login credentials for multiple users (this breaks several of the top cybersecurity best practices)
2) SMS-only two-factor authentication (at least there's the promise of additional methods coming....)

Please advise!

@Johnny M,

There are many many reasons why "give out the primary username/password with full control of the account and payment options" is doesn't work for a lot of people.

Are there any plans (not wish list, not idea, but a plan) to add multiple tiers of access so people can enjoy app access to arm/disarm but not mess with devices, payment, service, etc?

For several weeks, my app has asked for the Master PIN to unlock app controls. After entering the pin, the same error message occurs saying "Base Station Busy, Your Base station is having trouble contacting Simplisafe. The data connection at its location may be weak. Try moving the Base Station." But even moving the Base Station does not solve the issue. What is wrong with my app?

It would be recommended to start your own thread for your question/problem because it's different than the concern of what started this thread originally. Besides, it's proper forum etiquette to start your own thread for your question, rather than "highjack" a thread that's about womeone else's question.

How are multiple users supposed to use the same username and password, when logins require an SMS for second factor?
Yes, this. Also, SMS is the weakest of the two-factor options.

However, there is a way to deal with this. If you have a VoIP service that allows text-to-email (like Google Voice), you can have the codes sent to multiple email recipients. I don't love Google but there's is the simplest to use and is free. Here's how this works in Google Voice.

1) Set Google Voice text messages to also go to gmail.
2) Set the email account to forward all Google Voice emails to all of the app users' email addresses.
3) Explain to each user that if they did not JUST try to login SimpliSafe to ignore the code and delete it.

Whoever is expecting the code now gets it via email shortly after requesting.

@thomas_12282724...

Dunno what goes on behind the scenes, but my GF/SO and I don't have any problems getting two different phones logged in on one account.

This is laughable from a company that won't answer a simple and non security related question without your secure word.... but they WANT you to share your account password!  LAUGHABLE for a SECURITY company!

While that works for husband wife situation or similar.... I can see where you'd want kids to have access on the app to arm/disarm but not have access to everything else!

Hubby and I don't have a problem both getting logged onto the app.

WOW!! This is hard to believe!
Every month, I have to enter my credentials for my wife to use SimpliSafe App from her iPhone and then after a month, her login expires and I have to enter the information again and again.. problem is that, they will send me a Text and I have to enter that number in her cell phone App.   So even if I give her my login and password, she still can't use the App at the end of the month (if I am not around).  This is not acceptable for such a big company that is trying to compete with ADT and other Valid big Alarm companies.  If I knew about this limitation, I would have stayed with ADT.

@DrSam sorry about catching this so late. But you can set up a second contact for multi-factor authentication, by going through the SimpliSafe app and navigating to Menu > Manage Account > Multi-Factor Authentication.

When it's time to log in again, you (or your wife) can select which device gets the confirmation code.

You'll still need to log in under the same email/username and password, but your wife would be able to do it on her own without waiting for the confirmation code from you.

Just finished setting up my new SimpliSafe system and found this when searching for how to add my wife to the account.

Quite frankly, if I'd known this was how things worked before I installed the system I would have packed it all up again and sent it back. The lack of proper multi-user support for a system like this is inexcusable. As someone deeply involved in cybersecurity as part of my work for the past 25 years I'm frankly appalled!

It's a shame they don't make this information available to people before they buy but also it's clearly not in their best interest to do so either.

Hey Simplisafe -- any update on this?  This is an important topic.  Users need to be able to add spouses, kids, etc to the app.  Please advise.
