Schedule motion detection on Outdoor Cameras

This request covers the ability to schedule Motion Detection on the Outdoor Camera, so that it is active only at certain times of the day.

There is a separate request to tie the Outdoor Camera's motion detection to the armed state - so that you can customize whether motion detection is on for Home/Away/Off modes. You can find that request here.

I'd like to request a new feature that allows users to toggle a camera's "Motion detection" functionality on/off on a schedule. I've found that my outdoor wireless cameras run out of battery more often than necessary because there's no way to automatically toggle off motion detection during days/times when we know we'll be home and going in/out of the monitored entrances throughout the day.

Currently the only way to control this is manually--by opening the app every morning to toggle motion detection off, then doing the same to toggle motion detection back on in the evening.

This new feature could save users a lot of battery charge and maintenance and cut down on unnecessary notifications. I suspect it could also be a boon for Simplisafe, as it means potentially reducing the amount of data storage required for account users who opt into auto-scheduling.

It would be great if I could schedule each camera for motion and alert detection. I would arm mainly at night, so I do not have to go in and turn on and off every day for each camera.  Otherwise we have a lot of activity in back yard wearing down battery and triggering many events.

@ronw300 Thank you for the suggestion! This request sounds similar to this thread, so I've merged your original post into it. This new feature has been submitted to our dev team - once we hear any news from them we'll provide an update.

this has been submitted to the dev team for 2 years.  Can we assume it's not really on the radar at this point??

@emily_s

I've been a Simplisafe customer for over a decade and just this week decided to add a couple of outdoor cameras to replace an old system from another manufacturer. I wish I had checked to see if this extremely basic functionality would be included in Simplisafe's cameras, but I guess I was fooled by A: the fact that the Simplisafe indoor cameras can be set to different states depending on the system arm state, and B: who in the world would ever want outdoor camera that can't schedule notifications?

My need here is extremely simple: I want my outdoor cameras to record events 24 hours a day, but only push notifications when I'm awake. I also want the rest of my system to push notifications to me if something happens inside my house at any hour.

Because the Simplisafe app treats all the device notifications as one type, I can't allow some notifications through my phone's do-not-disturb setting. I either get no information about what kind of alarm is going on. or I get woken up every time someone walks past my house at night. Maybe if I lived on a private estate, that would be fine, but I live in a city where my front door is directly on the sidewalk.

Simplisafe tech support suggested that I go into the app every night and every morning and turn notifications on and off for each camera.  Yeah, I'm not going to do that. These cameras are getting returned and I'm looking for another system that can handle this extremely simple and reasonable use case.

When I am out doing yardwork or just enjoying my backyard, I get constant alerts from my 4 outdoor cameras plus all the motion detection drains the camera batteries.  Thankfully, it is currently possible to disable and enable the motion sensors and notifications for each camera individually.  However, this is a bit of a chore when you have many cameras, worse when you are in a rush, and it is very easy to forget to re-enable them all and thus not be protected by the cameras until you remember to reenable them.   It would be great if it was possible to enable/disable motion detection all at once for all cameras, and even better if I was able to disable them temporarily for a set amount of time (perhaps even with some choice of time intervals), then have them re-enabled automatically when that time period is met, and receive a notification that they have been re-enabled.   Any chance this feature can be added to the backlog?

Hi @SimpliBZ,

We do have a Snooze Notifications feature that sounds pretty similar to your idea! With Snooze Notifications enabled, you can temporarily pause motion notifications from your cameras for a set amount of time. Once that time is up, you will receive notifications again. You can learn more about this feature in this Help Center article.

Hi @emily_s,

Thanks for pointing out that feature!  I did not know about that, and gave it try.  It certainly does help to snooze notifications, but, unfortunately,  it still keeps the camera enabled and thus draining the battery, fills up the timeline, and has to be done for each camera after you receive a notification which requires a recent notification from each camera to still be in your notification history.   I wish that I could say that it solves more of the use case that I am describing above.

@SimpliBZ I certainly understand where you're coming from! We have also submitted the suggestion to schedule the Outdoor Camera's motion detection to our dev team. This should also address the use case you mentioned. Once we get any news from our dev team, an update will be provided in this thread.

It's been the better part of 2 years since you made this excellent request and there's still no camera notification scheduling. The competition like Arlo and Blink has had it for years. I'm pretty happy with Simplisafe except for this glaring omission. It's hard to understand why they don't offer this even for monthly premium subscribers, especially in light of the recent subscription price hike.

Another request for scheduling time windows for receiving camera motion alerts / both for all cameras or individually for each camera - this is essential and long overdue.

to everyone else: I suggest everyone place a call to customer service directly and take the time to adamantly request the feature live to a rep and ask them to pass it along.

Seems it would be very simple to give the user the option to link camera activity to Home and/or Away modes with the option to have it set for Always On. To have the ONLY option as ALWAYS ON for over two years this feature change has been requested is ridiculous. Turning motion off on the cameras is a pain and a hidden feature in the UI.  My front door camera runs out of battery within 24 hours - essentially making it a useless camera. How very disappointing that this hasn’t been changed/added yet.

@TC994a

This is why I dropped simplisafe and returned to Ring. Spoke to several customer service reps who couldn’t care less about losing another customer.

I just got a Simplisafe system for my business and I had no idea that there was no way to toggle the cameras to just turn on when we turned it on the system at night, and then off when we turn it off in the morning. If I can find the time to return the system before the 60-day trial is over, I will. Having to remember to futz with the app twice a day is ridiculous.

@tiptopwineshop You're so right. This has been an issue from the beginning. It has been years since Simplisafe has been notified of those issues. Despite there being what should be a relatively easy programming solution for such an important feature, "bupkus" has been done. We are just told this issue has been referred to the Simplisafe team, whatever that means. Clearly there is a disconnect between the customers needs and this company.

@tiptopwineshop The Outdoor Camera was designed to stay on and record when motion is detected. However, our devs are working on a feature that ties the camera's motion detection to its armed state, so when the system is off, cameras won't record. Once the feature is ready to roll out to users, we'll let everyone know in this thread. But if you do return your system, thank you for giving SimpliSafe a try!

@emily_s did the Devs give any timeline? This has been requested for years and seems to have not made any of the development sprints so far. I was purchasing a competitors camera system and likely to cancel the rest of my SimpliSafe subscriptions but if this is in the near future I would hold off. Timeline would help keep a lot of us around I’m sure.

Hello Emily,

Thank you for this update. Further periodic updates will be greatly appreciated, especially any ETA for the launch of this valuable feature.

@emily_s It would be far more useful (rather than cameras are basically off when system is on) to allow enabling each aspect of these features for each camera (or for all cameras.)  Some of us have cameras we DO want on all the time (eg front door) and other ones we only want on when the alarm is set (eg pool, yard, etc).  Turning motion notification on/off as well as motion detection on/off for each camera individually or for all cameras would seem to not be that difficult, and is pretty standard with other alarm systems.

Please enable/develop this feature. I have 5 cameras. Everytime I mow my lawn, I have to go into settings on each camera to disable motion alerts or "snooze" them individually. A single toggle would be beneficial.

13 Messages

>>  "snooze" them individually

yup - that's if you catch the notification on your phone in time- which is momentary!

Aside from snoozing the notifications, there *really* needs to be a way of disabling motion detection on those cameras - it runs the batteries down and sends unecessary footage to the servers 🤦‍♂️

I agree with everyone, this is so needed. I have mine plugged into the solar panel and it's still not enough to stay charged with the amount of activity during the day. It's pretty rediculous that Simplisafe still does not have this feature after all of these comments. It's been two years!

13 Messages

I've exactly the same issue re: solar charger.

In the summer, the charging is not bad, but the constant notifications & battery drain due to uneccesary triggering (i.e. when I'm there) is frankly driving me to consider switching provider.

The worst part is they have been promising a fix for years. I love the alarm system, the cameras are garbage because they can’t fix this. I’ve switched to another company to provide video security. I’m done waiting for SS to get their act together on a basic feature like this.

I would love this feature.

To all: the only way to add pressure is to take the 5-10m to call into the customer service line and speak to someone live to request this feature and explain how important it is to you.

@joshds please don't do that. This Community thread is already the best and most direct way to make your voice heard!

I meet with our Product team on a regular basis and I tell them about feedback like this. If there is ever any traction for this particular idea, I will keep you updated.

6 Messages

I'm confused by the "if there's ever any traction for this particular idea"... in this thread 4 months ago Emily_S said this was in the works.  I take it that was not honest?  And the competitor services DO have this feature.  It's crazy annoying to keep getting alerts from a camera I don't want monitored when the alarm isn't set - I got over 40 alerts today in a 2 hour period from our pool camera; and it's a pain to turn the alerts off on each camera (multiple steps) and then remember to turn it back on before setting the alarm.  Come on, it's 2024, this is an easy fix.  It truly makes me wish I hadn't gone with SimpliSafe.

6 Messages

@davey_d it’s been more than two years and this feature has still not been added. I’m going to start calling and suggest anyone who desires it do the same.

@tharpmorgan we might have been referring to a different request, Outdoor Camera Motion tied to alarm state, which is indeed already in development.

Davey, please let us know what "the Product Team" is saying about this   Is it not important enough?  Have they asked their customers via market focus or happened to look at the community forum devoted to customer feedback?

This is not a rocket science monumental programming task.  It should be .about as easy as they come.  A binary radio button (off/on) for notifications for each camera with a sliding time schedule.  Let's not forget that we put a man on the moon in 1969.

The tendency is for customers, who are given lip service, to seek other modalities to air their grievances.  Before we start doing that, could you please remind the Product Team that their customers are approaching the end of their patience with this utter lack of transparency.  Thank you.

Davey,

Over the last two years we have been trying to explain to you that the issue is that we need more control of the cameras. This is serious.  We have not had any specific feedback from you or managment.  Your Development Team needs instructions from upper management to seek specifcations and solutions to address the issue.  Your job, should you decide to accept it, is to bring this issue to the attention of the proper managment.  Please allow me to delineate the specific problems and propose the specifications for resolution.

Currently, I see two main problems.  First, your customers are inundated with multiple camera notifications over the course of every day.  With the multiple triggering of camera(s) via motion detection, battery life is shortened dramatically.  The "Crying Wolf" nature of multiple notifications and the need to constantly recharge batteries dramatically reduces the usefulness of the Simplisafe system.  Your customers are being worn down and you will lose them to other security systems the unless an adequate solution is promptly enacted. Management should also be made aware that new customer recruitment can be affected by social media posts about this problem.

Please allow me to propose the following ideal specifications for a solution:

1. Give users the options to tie FILMING with each camera (separately) to be "ON" with either an alarm status (Off/Home/Away) or a sliding time schedule.  Each camera should also have a "Camera Off Switch".

2.  Also give users the options to tie the NOTIFICATIONS with each camera (separately) to be "ON" with either an alarm status (Off/Home/Away) or a sliding time schedule.  Each camera should also have a "Notifications Off Switch".

This customization would likely be set once at the time of installation, but could be easily modified for special occasions.  This ability to customize will address the surveillance needs of customers ranging from intruder warnings to the oversight of children playing in the yard.  This level of solution would also move Simplisafe from last place in serving customers in this regard to first place.  Management should appreciate how solving this problem, which is suspected of reducing customer retention and acquisition (as highlighted in customer comments), can morph into an opportunity to retain and build your customer base.

Just look at what Arlo, and especially Blink do in their respective apps. Cameras can be put on an arming schedule in both, and Blink easily allows temporary snoozing of one or all cameras. It's perplexing that Simplisafe remains so unresponsive with this issue.

I think that SimpliSafe's lack of interest/ability to allow recording flexibility with their outdoor cameras despite years of complaints leads me to begin abandoning them and looking for more consumer-responsive companies as well as discouraging people from purchasing SimpliSafe products.

I hate myself every day since I replaced my Arlo cameras with SimpliSafe.  I thought it would be awesome to have everything under one app but if I had known the complete limitations SimpliSafe has on their devices I would not have wasted the money.  The only smart thing SimpliSafe has done is to make these boards only available to members and not the general public.  If the general public knew the limitations with SimpliSafe they wouldn't sell another camera.

@caleblrose A lot of us have been posting on social media. Reddit, Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, Nextdoor are all public. Not exactly a “viral” topic but at least it gets the word out and maybe puts some pressure on SimpliSafe

I've blown them up on FB and Nextdoor as well.  Agree I doubt it does any good but it makes me feel better for a few minutes.

From Blink (blue), Arlo (green), we're not asking for anything that hasn't been around elsewhere for years.

15 Messages

I switched back to Arlo as my primary cameras. This company clearly doesn’t care for their customer suggestions or keeping up with their competition. The alarm system is solid, cameras are like some bolt on system they are clearly in over their head trying to program.

I agree, it is a total waste of battery life to have my exterior cameras recording during the day.  I get long lists of my dogs running around or me sitting outside.  Please update the system to allow schedule motion detection on the cameras.

I’d like to go further and ask for sensitivity adjustments based on day/night schedules. We had vehicle break-ins across our neighborhood recently and few if any cameras in the neighborhood picked up on the burglars. I bought a 6th outdoor camera and mounted it above the garage door since the driveway is a bit out of the 30’ range advertised for my other cameras. To my dismay, the camera range for detecting people is downright poor during the day and non-existent during the night. I could even enter the car without setting off the motion sensor at night a mere 10’ from the camera with sensitivity all the way up. I have lights on either side of the driveway on all night long, so there is ample light for the camera without the spot light. Called support and tried three different mounting locations and angles. Ultimately sent it back and now realize these cameras are useless at night unless the motion is square center in the camera field of view at very short distances. This must be improved or the news will get out that your cameras are useless.

During the day however, I get tons of nuisance recordings from cars up the street. Which makes me think that if we could set the sensitivity lower during daylight hours and Even Higher at night, it might work better.

I t would be highly beneficial if your product could evolve to include scheduling features for outdoor cameras to detect motion, rather than requiring manual adjustments through the app each time. As a UX professional, it seems quite outdated for a security product to lack the capability to automatically schedule exterior cameras based on the user's presence at home.

This oversight feels akin to purchasing a car but having to install the steering wheel every time you need to drive.

Don't hold your breath.  This feature has been "coming" for at least a couple of years now...

@tharpmorgan I know! I just had to vent after so many years of head in the sand innovation.
