Smoke Alarm

Hi, today 7-19-2022, my smoke alarm in the hallway went off around 11:44 pm. Everyone was in bed, there was no smoke around the house and nothing that I could see or smell that would trigger it to go off. Emergency services were dispatched. This is the second time in less than a month this has happened. Any thoughts? SS stated that dust could be the culprit??

Hi @Wareperez ,

That might be the case. It helps to know that the Smoke Detector works by detecting tiny particles passing through a chamber inside. So yes, it's looking out for smoke, but it could also be set off by water vapor (like from a shower or a dishwasher), and especially dust.

Since this is the second time it's happened in a short time, it might be a good idea to clean around the Smoke Detector's grill with a vacuum cleaner, as well the surrounding area.

My smoke alarm is chirping and it's 1 am in the morning. I don't have a replacement battery. What do I do?

@paoligirl1 Does your Smoke Detector also have a steady yellow light while it is chirping, or is there a yellow flashing light?

If the light is flashing yellow, that means that the device's battery needs to be replaced, but if the light is a steady yellow, that means that its Tamper Switch isn't held down properly. You can resolve this by unmounting the Smoke Detector, slightly loosening its screws, and then mounting the Smoke Detector again. You can learn more about the Tamper Switch in this Help Center article.
