False Alarm - Fire

I have recently experienced two false alarms (fire alarms) that appear to have been triggered by construction activity in the house.  Has anyone else experienced this problem?  I am guessing (but do not know) that the alarm sensor treats construction-related dust as smoke.

Without the search function neither of us can go find the previous post.  There was a post that at least said it was possible to get some false alarms, especially in a "work" area with lots of dust.  Another poster suggested using canned air once a month to make sure the smoke detector has less of a chance for a false alarm.

^ Yep, those are Captain's recommendations - the smoke detector seems incredibly susceptible to any kind of dust, and apparently they need to be cleaned on a constant basis (his idea of cans of compressed air are both easy and economical!  I believe he said he does his once a month.

Yes, if dust enters the Smoke Detector chamber then this might trigger your alarm! If you're doing construction on the house but don't want the Fire Department dispatched, you can remove the Smoke Detector from your system and then re-add it when you're done with construction. This way, the Smoke Detector will still work, but won't be connected to dispatch.

@coltmaster1, General, Lee C, seems to be reunion time on one thread; all we need is seven and dp!

The cans of compressed air are at Costco for under 8 bucks for case  of 9. My last case was over six months ago and I am still only on my third can, with six smoke sensors.  Lee, another nicely done response and common sense recommendation on how to avoid issues with construction.  Add painting to construction as I always take them down when our painter is in.  Also please add to the new CRC. BTW, you should moderate some online webinars. You will be very good at it!

A great way to avoid false alarms during construction work in your home is to place dust covers over the smoke detectors such as these: https://www.homedepot.com/p/Kidde-Smoke-Alarm-Dust-Paint-Cover-6-Pack-21027648/302682982

We have three smoke detectors and one has been so bad about falsely alarming that we had to remove it from the system. SimpliSafe has failed to learn from and improve their own systems and technology.

they will soon go the way of Sears, Montgomery Ward, and K-mart
