Simplisafe vs. Ring Home Security

I was in Costco yesterday and saw the Ring home security kit: https://www.costco.com/Ring-Alarm-Wireless-10-piece-Security-Kit.product.100424042.html.  Has anyone had any experience with this?  Not only is the price very competitive ($239 for the entire kit), but the monthly monitoring is only $10 (which includes video monitoring if you install their cameras or doorbells).

I also just found out that if you purchase the monitoring plan annually, it's only $100 for the entire year!  SS is $300.  That savings alone would almost pay for the Ring equipment as well.

I hope SimpliSafe responds to this soon. I am pretty close to switching if pricing does not come down. I like the hardware much better, but the savings is too hard to ignore, especially because I already have Ring's outdoor equipment.

For what it's worth, I received a note from Twitter that there are no plans to reduce the monitoring cost. I will be switching over to Ring and selling my SimpliSafe system and accessories. Good luck remaining SimpliSafe peeps.

Why/when does anyone lower prices? At least SimpliSafe has been consistent in pricing and has not raised it. $24.99 is very reasonable for full monitoring . You'd better hope ring doesn't have increases in the future. My ADT fee went from $36>$53 in the course of 4.5 years.

@jloco - Well SimpliSafe has now raised monitoring fees TWICE in two years.

Wow... I believe I am also going with Ring... my "older" version of Simplisafe will not work with Alexa... it's all about the $$$... ready to start saving some...

You may want to keep your SS equipment until that Ring system proves itself.  It would be annoying to have to rebuy SS if you find that Ring is only worth what you pay for it.  Or less.

You go off the best information you have at the time. I waited 6 months and by now I see no issues with Ring or any indication that prices will rise. People with SimpliSafe better hope Ring doesn't keep prices low and/or come out with better features.

@ksmoke, you are correct, you make the best decision with the information you have at the time.  For me, Jan 2018 it was SS3, and in December 2018, still is at the 24.99 interactive plan. It may that being a veteran (or victim) of ADT for all those  years, I am for the most part very happy with SS. No perfection here, but I don't think Amazon or Ring has that locked up either.  There will be better things coming from both companies, but I am sticking with SS for the long haul as I believe Simplisafe will bring the best overall value to market..

If you think ring is a better solution for your needs, go for it.
Personally, $24 a month is very affordable compared to ADT fees I used to pay.
I just installed SS yesterday, so we'll see how it goes over the next 60 days.

One other thing to keep in mind is connectivity.

The SS system connects via Wifi and cellular for alarm annunciation.  I'm pretty sure the Ring only connects via Wifi which would make it easier for a thief to disable.
The SS cameras do need a Wifi, however.

Ring does in fact use both WiFi and Cellular just like SimpliSafe.

I think Ring offers cellular backup.

Yep... Ring has cellular backup. Looks like a good system.

I only recently switched to SimpliSafe from a much higher priced provider, Ring used to be one of the contenders for me with it's lower prices. All I want to say is, make sure to read plenty of reviews of both systems, including the technology both use and what the thoughts are on what the future will bring for both systems.

Another thing to consider is that Ring is owned by Amazon and doesn't play nice with the Google Home system due to the ongoing feud between Amazon and Google (in this case it's Amazon not playing nice with Google since they don't update their devices to work with the Google Home while the Google APIs are readily available). This may especially be important when you have a smart home and are invested in one system over the other. If you are heavily involved in Amazon's smart system, then Ring would definitely be a good contender, but if you're into Google more, it may not be a good choice despite the lower cost.

In my case, I am a customer of both Google and Amazon but I mostly use the Google Home system over Alexa (since Home seems to work better), and that turned me to SimpliSafe instead. I do still have a Ring doorbell, but that will soon be replaced for a Nest Hello for the same reasons (that will cost me an additional 2 buck a month as their subscription is slightly higher, but the advanced technology as well as better tie in (less irritations on my end) will make it worth it to me).

Ultimately, we are all just paying our money and taking our chances.  Use what you want.

Personally, I like the SimpliSafe system, would I like to see it cost less?  SURE!  And maybe pressure from guys like you will drive them to lower prices.  But I like the idea that SS pretty much only does security, they've got to find a way to make home security not only work for us, but for them as well!

Do I have faith that Google and Amazon are in the home security business for the long haul? No, I do not.  The minute home security becomes more trouble than it is worth to them, they will get out of the business.  Even ADT has to figure out how to make Home Security work for them. Google and Amazon, do not.

Good luck with Ring.  I have two of their cameras...a doorbell and spotlight cam...and they both need a high speed internet connection to function properly. Their customer service isn't all that great either.

Plus Ring does not yet have a full compliment of sensors compared to SS.  You might save a few bucks, but I prefer to have everything monitored by a variety of sensors, not just a limited few.

10 days in with SS and I can pretty much tell I'll be keeping the system.. CS has been excellent so far. I've not experienced long waits on Hold as others have experienced. CS reps have been very knowledgeable and were able to answer all my questions. Ordered system received in 3 days.. Verizon module ordered later, also received in 3 days. Interference issue corrected over the phone. Easy/peasy... COPS has responded to tests in under a minute on the several tests that I ran.

I also looked at both including Abode and Nest as well.

Simplisafe has panic buttons and other things the others don't

Yes monitoring is more.. but it works!

I also got to give props to the CEO who started it... He saw a business that really needed to be disrupted out together a great distrupting product, AND has improved it year after year.

These systems are really coming into their own NOW in 2019.  I think these guys have done a great job leading the way,

And now is when these alarms will be mainstream imo

Ring is now owned by Amazon which I do not like.  I do have a number of Ring products though which I love. And since I was a way early adopter I have a lifetime free plan. I have quite a few doorbells and cameras with no monthly charge.

I wonder if that applies to the security system (probably not)

I have a relative in Arizona that lives in an apartment and she says many of the tenants have Ring

I plan on sticking with SS.
