Return old 2G cell module?

SimpliSafe is dedicated to providing our customers with expert-level protection, and this includes ensuring 24/7 access to our professional monitoring centers via a strong cellular connection. For more info on our efforts to address 2G Sunset, including obtaining and installing a new cellular module, check out our Help Center Article here.

Got the email advising to make change to the 4G cell module. On clicking the request link I got both a confirmation of the order, and a prepaid label to return the old module. No explanation as to why.

Has that been their policy with everyone getting the 4G module? Is there any security risk in doing so, ie any identifying information in the old module being returned? Anybody not returned theirs?

Sorry this hasn't been answered for you.  But for reference, I asked tech support today if I could keep my old one in the event the new one didn't work as intended, was told that was fine.

There's no reason I can think of that would be a risk to send it back.  Your info is stored in your base station, not a SIM on a module (as far as I know).

Sometimes a requirement to return parts is simply to (try to) rid the field of parts that you want or need out of circulation.

In the past we've asked dealers to destroy parts that we paid for or provided replacements for but wanted out of circulation. They didn't destroy them and those old parts found their way into repairs. Then, you see problems crop up you thought were fixed, and were, but those old/bad parts never went away like they were supposed to.

I sent both mine back because otherwise they probably would have ended up in a junk drawer, gathering dust for no useful purpose.
