The new system uses encrypted signals and the old system does not. Thus no sensors from the old system work with the new system (the cameras don't talk to the system, so work with both).
The new system can be updated; the old system is hard coded.
The new system allegedly has double the range between base and sensors, and has three times as many sensors (100?) than the old one. The new system external siren is fully integrated - no more "synching". The new temperature sensor has both a high alert and a low alert setting both of which can be set to any degree between 0 and 99. The new system is controlled through the keypad rather than that twinky USB resident program. The new keyfobs do not have a replaceable battery.
The old system is "still supported", but will not get any upgrades or changes, and "some day" they will run out of replacement components and/or decide to drop support. Any SS4 system will probably build off of SS3 and be a much easier upgrade from there rather than from SS2.
There have been several upgrade offers; most around 40% with the return of the "key" SS2 components (base, keypad, master USB). I think that is an acceptable deal (if you can get it) if you want to upgrade. Without that deal, I'm not sure it's worth upgrading. But that depends on your finances and needs and tolerance for their ineffective support.
^ Funny you should mention the keyfob's non-replaceable battery. Many of us are coming up on the tail end of the 3-yr warranty on SS3, and not a peep from SS as to how they are going to handle new keyfob replacements.
