Customizing System

I'm curious about how 'customizable' SimpliSafe is.

Currently, I live in a pretty populated area with a couple good neighbors and my older children are home along with my wife most of the time. Well, heck - I work remote right now, so there's always someone here.

But I'm moving to a more rural area soon, which heightens the need to actually use some of the stuff I bought.

I have a few existing cameras that I have yet to use. I also have a power over Ethernet switch, which I want to use because it's a solid single-cable setup. I have like 25+ years experience with IT, including infrastructure support - so running Ethernet/FiberOptic, setting up wireless - all that jazz I know quite well. I'm also well experienced with a number of operating systems and could do local monitoring pretty easily, including mounting up cloud storage on my Linux machine and writing data to cloud storage directly, probably with a local NAS at the house to capture everything.

So my question is.. can I get SimpliSafe to work in tandem with my nerd-ness? I would like to use a couple of the cameras I have for exterior mounting along with a dome camera I have that also does audio for some interior spaces. Then augment those cameras with some from perhaps SimpliSafe.

It also brings the concept of upgrading cameras to better resolution and/or infrared into my mind.

Can SimpliSafe deal with that? How does the automated system handle interfacing with the call center and/or contacting police or medical services?

I could, of course, maintain the systems with some separation, but a system that could handle all of that would be my primary goal :)

@regloff being a professional IT propeller head, yes, you love to "tweak" but as far as security (at least with the main factors) suggest you follow the KISS principle.  Yes, pleanty of customer created hacks here in the forum, as my garage door sensor would indicate but I am not ready to start changing transmitting frequencies.  And, especially, don't recommond screwing around with the disptach communications process.

Simplisafe is looking into improving the monitoring and disptach process on their own, and if you wish to read more about their RapidSOS alliance efforts, that would be a good place to start. I posted a blurb on it last week with a link to the news article. Just do a Google site search and you will find it.

As far as other things, like integration aspects, God speed and post your advancements here so we can all benefit from them. (Gee, I might be able to have my house lights go on yet with an alarm condition!)

Keep us posted on your efforts.

Thanks for the reply :)

Yeah, I don't want to mess with the system to the point where it doesn't work and I get the KISS concept for sure. I wouldn't want to get so nerdy as to compromise the functionality of the system, but I would like to add cameras here and there or upgrade them as new ones become available on the market.

I would also like to setup a monitor with a live feed and perhaps have SimpliSafe handle cameras as designed, but at the same time - it would be nice to be able to grab that feed on an independent system as well so I could capture all of the data on a NAS in addition to what the system writes to the cloud.

Or even an API to work with some of it..

But I do have the sense to read up on the system and understand what impact various 'tweaks' would have. Maybe I made it sound like I wanted to go all-out and customize every piece of it! haha, but really - I just want some flexibility with a system.

Like controlled lights would be fantastic and such...  but the dispatch/monitoring part is why I'm looking into a service, of course. The rest is just fine and even if I get data to the cloud and have great video of any slime who do break in, having the monitoring service be able to ring local dispatch is the best way to really protect things. Well, that and a couple good dogs, of course :)

Opt in for virtual visualization and you have a good start, with video/monitoring and when SS adds an outdoor camera, that will be pretty robutst. Add SS's efforts with RapidSOS and pretty good activity in those areas. Ah, but on integration, it is almost useless what has been done with Ehco and Google devices.  If you could figure out a secure way to integrate SS3 with iOT connected lights and other devices, then you really got something there. Have to note I am pessimistic you will be able to do so as many others have tried, but, hey, go for it.

Hi Overcast451,

Since you posted in this section, I'm assuming that you don't yet have a SimpliSafe system. You might want to know that our system is really a 'closed' one, where the communication between SimpliSafe components is unique to our company. So we can keep the system more tightly locked and secure.

However, we don't offer as much (official) interoperability with equipment from other companies. With Interactive Monitoring, we currently enable sharing of info and arming control over voice command through Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant for example, but that's as far as it goes. Our strategy is geared closer towards offering everything that a typical user would need for a complete system, by continually adding more of our own sensors and components.

Thanks for the reply and information! Are the only cameras you offer WiFi?

There may be one or two I would need to install that would have a bit more distance between them and the router, which is why I'm interested in POE style cameras. Not opposed to WiFi in areas where it would work ok, of course.

Overcast451,

Yes, both of our current camera offerings (the SimpliCam Indoor Camera and the Video Doorbell Pro) are WiFi-only. We don't have any wired options available right now, unfortunately.

That's ok, I'm just looking at options in general. :)
I'm probably going to get something like SimpliSafe and augment it with a stand-alone cam system to be honest. I do like what you all offer. I get it's hard, if not impossible to support every piece of equipment out there, particularly when some of it is really sub-par.

Thanks for your time!

Overcast451,

For sure! And there's value in not putting all your eggs in the same basket, as the saying goes. We're just happy to help however we can.

But if you do end up going with us, our forumers would be eager to hear about your setup and what solutions you come up with!
