if I unplug the base will it disturb everything else? And does the base have to be out in the open, or can I put it next to a shelf that blocks one side of it.

Hi @Sharmy,
The Base Station comes equipped with backup rechargeable batteries that will keep it running for up to a day. As long as the batteries are giving the Base Station power, unplugging it will not disturb your system. But if the batteries run out, the Base Station will not be able to communicate to the devices on your system or our monitoring center, so we do recommend keeping it plugged in.
We also recommend that the Base Station is placed in a central area of your home, and is in open air. It should also be put on a non-dense material like wood or glass that is at least 3 feet from the ground. Placing the Base Station right next to a shelf could interfere with its communication to your other SimpliSafe devices, as a denser object is physically getting between them.
