Securing outdoor space

Our business has an outdoor space which is gated, but has unwanted visitors at night (vandals and petty thieves).  I see there are outdoor cameras available, but what does this achieve?  Would it just record them and I would see the video in the morning?  I'm on the monitoring plan, but would anyone look at the feed if an alarm wasn't going off?

Hi @Chuck37 ,

SimpliSafe does focus primary on indoor protection, but yes, we also have the Wireless Outdoor Camera available. With a compatible recording subscription, the camera can initiate recordings when its built-in motion sensor is triggered. You'll also get a notification in real time, so you can check who's there right away.

In terms of monitoring service, the Outdoor Camera also supports Video Verification. So yes, if there was an alarm event, then the monitoring agent would be able to watch a video clip from that camera. But currently, they are not able to see a live feed from Outdoor Cameras.

@davey_d Thanks.  Since it would be outside I'd need a way for the alarm to go off before video verification could happen.  Is it a bad idea to put a motion sensor outside if I could protect from elements and put it somewhere that no person or animal would ever set it off?

@Chuck37 unfortunately yes, our sensors (Motion, Glassbreak, Entry, etc.) are not built for outdoor use at all, and wouldn't be able to handle rain or even condensation very well. But on top of that, the Motion Sensor works by sensing heat that is passing through its field of view. Since that 'heat sense' is calibrated for indoors, it might not work predictably, if at all, outside.
