Push Notifications remain active when logged out of the app

I found a strange little bug in the SimpliSafe app that seems to happen when a user has the app installed and then is no longer logged into it.

If someone is logged into the app, and then is not, they seem to still get doorbell related alerts. I saw this on another family members phone the other day. I then changed our account password (it seems so strange to say that in 2023 - stop with the shared account and get us role based controls you are way behind here) and forced logout on all other devices.

I noticed I was still getting notifications on my non-signed in device and other family members. At first I was alarmed as that info could be dangerous, but then I noticed it was only the doorbell related ones. Both motion sensor and button pushes triggered notifications on all of the devices that were logged out and didn’t know the current password.

Hello folks,

Just wanted to update and close this out.

This is actually an expected behavior. That is, even when you are logged out of the app, you should still be getting Push Notifications. Remember that the SimpliSafe app will automatically log out if there has been no app activity for 30 days. When that happens, we would still want notifications for alarm events to go through.

If you would like to disable Push Notifications, you'll want to do so in the SimpliSafe app:

  1. Log into the Simplisafe app
  2. Navigate to ☰ Menu > Alerts & Notifications > Push Notifications
  3. Toggle all options to Off

If you'd prefer not to log back in, the best option is to either clear the cache for the app, or delete and re-install the app.

@davey_d Even after a password change?

So, let's take this scenario. A person is living with a domestic abuser. They get a restraining order and the abuser is removed from the household. However, they still have the Simplisafe app on the phone.

From what you are saying, "expected behavior" is to make sure that the abuser would have access to the alerts. Granted they wouldn't be able to log into the app, but alert notifications can give someone information on when the person is home, when they leave, doors used, change of behavior patterns, etc which could be extremely dangerous in situations like I've described.

So, if SimpliSafes stance is that they are an alerting company and not a security company, then ok.

Hi @baldar538,

Thanks for reporting. We're not familiar with this issue, so it might be a new one that we'll need to investigate deeper. I'll send this over to our engineers.

I just force logged out of another family members device and changed the account password and they are still receiving ALL notifications for cameras, locks, alarm status - everything. What the heck?? I made sure that they were indeed logged out on the phone app. In fact, I even closed the app and re-opened it. They are still receiving notifications for everything. How is this even possible?

Hi @jwdonal

I'm going to escalate this to our engineering team for review. Would you mind letting me know if you are using iOS or Android, and provide the version number of the OS the phone in question is running? We'd want this information specifically from the device that is logged out currently and still receiving push notifications.

Thank you in advance!

This is happening to me as well. This really needs to be fixed.

@vegandj It is the app's expected behavior to still alert you with push notifications even if you are logged out. The app automatically logs you out after 30 days if you haven't used it, so this is to ensure that you're still given updates about your system.

However, you can always disable push notifications in the mobile app by taking these steps:

  1. Log into the SimpliSafe app
  2. Navigate to ☰ Menu in the upper left corner
  3. Select Alerts & Notifications, then Push Notifications
  4. Toggle all options to Off

This is unacceptable. I have my ex still able to access my every move even though I have completely removed him from my account. I NEED this fixed or I will be cancelling and giving away my system. It is compromising my safety and my children safety.
