Android Do Not Disturb and App Notification Exceptions

I have the simplisafe app that notifies me with a message and sound when the cctv camera detect people. It works fine and notifies me normally but when my scheduled Do Not Disturb session starts it doesn't sound a notification (the message appears however). This is despite both the app being added in the 'Allowed During Do Not Disturb' settings AND in the 'Special Access-Do Not Disturb' settings. This happens accross all my devices (Samsung S21 running Android and Galaxy Tab S7+ Tablet running Android 13) and my wife's.

When I asked Simplisafe they questioned why I would want notifications if I have Do Not Disturb on.....!? Well maybe I dont want to be alerted with a trivial whatsapp post but I would like to be notified when there's someone in my back yard. They then went on to say its Android's or Samsung's fault despite other security apps like Tuya Smart behaving correctly under Do Not Disturb.

Anyone have this issue and /or resolved it?

Regards

Shaun

Hi @sgreynolds189 ,

It sounds like you're talking about a feature called Critical Alarm Notifications. You can read about how to enable it on our Help Center article here.

Thanks Davey

Only just seen this response. The article sets out what I had already done as mentioned in the original post. It doesn't resolve the issue. As I also mentioned this happens accross all my android devices and my wife's so it must be an app issue.

Regards

Shaun

Hi @sgreynolds189,

Could you please try removing the SimpliSafe app from one of your devices and then download it again? In the past, that has worked for users experiencing notification issues. I would just like to try it on one of your devices first to see if that would be a fix in this case!

Thanks dlspsr

I attach a screenshots below showing the settings I have set showing the settings I have set

. I have tested this further and the issue seems to occur when my scheduled DND period comes on. If I manually set DND, the notifications come through. Any thoughts.

My Samsung XCover6 Pro was handling "Do Not Disturb" notification exceptions "Camera Flash" & "Flash Screen" just fine for months. Now I can't get it to do either. Someone could break my windows, open doors or windows, walk past my motion detectors up to my bed and stick me with a knife and my phone would just sit there, silent in the dark.

Doesn't do much to NOTIFY me!

Mean while, my wifes phone (apple) is jumping all over the countertop in the kitchen.

@mcwdixie Have you recently updated your phone or app lately? It could be possible that a recent update reset your Critical Alerts setting and they need to be turned back on.

I would check to ensure that Critical Alerts are still turned on by following the steps in this Help Center article

Beside the special exception pic shown above I have mine like this. S23 Ultra.

And even though sound is supposed to be overridden in an alarm, I use Samsung modes and routines to blast the volume up to max or loud enough for me to hear it and send it to a Bluetooth speaker as well, really loud, siren sound etc.

I'll test it tonight and see if mine still works.

I'll turn on DND and test it shortly.

Ok, just turned on DND, my settings have been the same for a year.🤔

Did not send sounds I have programmed thru my phone.

Without blaming Simplisafe just yet, I'll investigate further and test some more. But I might, my go-to for failures. 😆😉😉

I did Beta test Android 14 at Samsung and it could certainly be that, at least for me.

Always worked before. I'll triple check my settings and annoy her some more with sirens.🤣 And report back if I find anything that works.

I have a similar issue since Android 14.

I have a Tasker profile and task that toggles off Media Volume Limit at say 10 PM and then back on at 6AM.

Sometimes the settings popup for that appears and forces me to click it and then just come back to where I was, before the setting takes effect.

I'll report on this and the DND on the Samsung community, and I'll try to duplicate and send a log file as well. You all may do so as well if you wish. Might get more attention.

In the meantime, since this creates a bit of a dangerous situation for us, I recommend what I'm doing, turning off DND and pausing or deleting my schedule for DND until it's fixed.

Well even with DND off something's still messed up. Undetermined at this time.

Also, I'm testing a bit differently, I'm self monitoring with cameras. So I'm only getting text etc. about an alarm when armed and I open a door.

But, it's not triggering my Tasker alarms that were working. Prior to switching to RCS instead of SMS in Google messages. I have reverted to test that theory, but nothing yet and not enough time to test adequately. Guess we're on our own temporarily. More when and if I know.

See @davey_d instructions above in this thread or here is the link. Make sure it's followed to the T.

https://support.simplisafe.com/articles/alarm-events-monitoring/how-do-i-make-sure-i-always-receive-alarm-alerts-even-when-my-phone-is-silenced/634479594a42432bbd44f8b6

Mine worked ok with Android 13, not so sure yet about 14.🤔🤣🙄

Since directions are a bit lengthy and jump via hyperlinks, also don't forget to make sure Simplisafe monitoring phone number is in your contacts and the text number 82539. May matter.

I've pretty much given up on this. (I'm the original poster).

My settings have been as described in the @davey_d instructions for over 6 months now and it still doesn't work over any of my devices. The only thing I can think of is that it has something to do with scheduled DND as opposed to just turning it on. My DND is scheduled for 10pm till 7am every night and I don't get any audible notifications from Simplisafe during that period.

We now leave my wife's phone off DND to be notified.

Hey ho......

You'd think this would just work, but it doesn't work here either. There's a bug somewhere.   I was wrong as it does work.  Hadn't done any troubleshooting on this since changing phones:  1) If you give Simplisafe App the DND permission, it will turn off DND when a critical push notification comes through and make a sound. 2) Turn off DND permission, when a critical push notification arrives it will make a sound but leave DND on.

I've chosen the latter.

@sgreynolds189 and @Z_B I've gone ahead and escalated your cases to our engineering team to take a look into. Someone will reach out to you both soon to get to the bottom of this, so keep an ear out for their call!

I have a Google Pixel 6 Pro running Android 14. I did everything listed in the document Davey linked above but also performed the actions below and it worked just fine.

  1. Open Settings
  2. Select Notifications
  3. Select Do Not Disturb
  4. Select Apps
  5. (If you don't have already have SimpliSafe listed as an added app then add it here)
  6. Select SimpliSafe from the list of "Apps that can interrupt"
  7. Choose which notifications you want to come through your DND

FYI, on my phone when I performed step 7 I was presented with the following screen:

Also, in case it matters (because I'm not going back to repeat this to test it, sorry) you may want to have DND turned on (as in, enabled for the phone so you see the DND icon at the top) when you go through these steps. If they don't work, turn it off and repeat.

If this works, please reply and let us know so SS can update their documentation. Thanks!

My gut tells me this is an Android issue, not a SimpliSafe issue.

I also verified it works on Samsung S23 Ultra, Android 14, One UI 6.0. Latest release version, tested this morning.

Test, intercept SMS or push containing Person Detected. (Wyze) In order to test Simplisafe, I'd have to irritate her with sirens going off.😬🤕🩸😆😂 She'll have to go shopping.

Task, music play a siren sound for a few seconds, then music stop.

DND did allow override and fire up the siren in the test Tasker profile and task on my phone.

Google has changed something for security reasons in A14, (which is nothing new, always breaking something in Tasker) so far anyhow I can't use anything in the body of an SMS or push and in Android 13 was able to, as I recall and DND did work before.

The Tasker developer may be able get around it, we'll see. I was able to use the title though.

When she's out, I'll setoff alarms with Simplisafe and verify push and text titles etc. for more testing and fix my profiles in Tasker.

Still checking on the Tasker side, but DND seems to work if setup properly.

Since I can't just monitor a Simplisafe sensor and do anything with it firing up the alarm is about the only way currently.🤔🙄

Duh, I can use the Doorbell camera. No alarms.

So the SimpliSafe test was;

Tasker autonotification intercept, Camera Detected Motion, seems to require exact title words. TBD.

Siren on my phone did fire up and DND was on. DND did work, but now I'll have to fire everything to get exact title words from Simplisafe push notifications for my personal use. But as per OP, it was manual DND not scheduled. TBD.

My assumption until tested with alarms, is DND "should" work with Simplisafe SMS or push during alarms as I see no difference.

The OP, May still be missing a setting somewhere or other unknown Samsung bugs. I have an S8+ tablet and haven't tested it there yet. It's a lot of work.😉

To the OP, I'd update those devices to the latest android version and see if that changes anything. Assumes Android 14 is available and released for those models now. Probably Samsung bugs.

To test further with Simplisafe and a daytime DND schedule, will have to wait until I have time later today. I'll report back.

Ok, further testing S23 Ultra, Android 14, scheduled DND, stepped in front of a Simplisafe outdoor camera. DND did allow my exceptions and fired up my test methods.

Can't see why any sms or push wouldn't work in an alarm. My testing may not equal another users tests. Confirmation by user required. Can't test Simplisafe alarms with SMS or push notifications any further at the moment.
