System Firmware 2.1 (March 2021)

Hi folks,

We've got a major update rolling out to all customers soon. Lots of updates under the hood, including performance and security improvements. But there's quite a few noticeable new features as well!

If you've never updated before, here's how:

  1. Make sure your system is connected to WiFi
  2. Check that an update is available by heading over to your Keypad and looking for a Gear icon
  3. Press the side of the screen where the Gear icon is, and follow the on-screen instructions

Here's what's coming in Update 2.1:

  • Improvements to WiFi performance and stability, including compatibility fix for Arris brand routers.
  • Your SimpliSafe system will now appear on your router's list of connected devices as "SimpliSafe", and no longer "Espressif".
  • Revamped Firmware Update process for a smoother experience when updating in the future.
  • "Check for Updates" feature will now immediately request to download the latest update, rather than just checking if it's available to install.
  • Fixed an issue where the Base Station LED might stay lit up after ringing your Video Doorbell.

For Users with an Arris brand Router:

If you have an Arris WiFi router, you may of course not be able to connect your Base Station to that WiFi router, which is necessary to facilitate this firmware update. A possible workaround is to connect your Base Station to a different WiFi network temporarily, until the update is complete.

Should you need to take your Base Station to a different location, you'll only need to bring your Keypads with you. Your sensors and other components can remain in place - you might just get error messages from them while they are out of range.

Hey delwad,

That would be on your Keypad Menu, under System Settings > Diagnostics.

Still not seeing the gear icon on my keypad and I haven't been updated yet....

I came to this forum looking for what this update is about. I've been a simpli safe user for a long time. My base tower was acting up when I armed it instead of saying simpli safe on home, it would say simpli safe and then the voice would cut off.  so I unplugged the base station for about 20 seconds then I plugged it back in and then all of the sudden, voila! the gear icon showed up on my keypad for an update. I downloaded everything in about 15 minutes and everything works fine now.

rushfanrtb,

Good to hear! Yep, sounds like something was going wrong with your system's firmware, and replacing it with new firmware was the right fix.

alex_124,

We're slightly different in that we only have the one model Base Station - all Gen 3 systems should be getting this update. But as a reminder, your system needs to be connected to WiFi for the update to show up on your device. You can follow the instructions on my original post to set that up!

Johnny I was hooked up to Wi-Fi. for some reason though the firmware got hung up being pushed down to my system.  I just got lucky finding the update.  The simpli safe voice prompts started cutting out not working right so I was trying to fix that and then after I unplugged the base station and plugged it back in then the update showed up on my keypad. I am hooked up to Wi-Fi all the time though.

So I was having issues with the event log getting clogged with useless "wifi disconnected, wifi reconnected" entries over and over again. I disconnected wifi because of that and have occasionally tried reconnecting to check for updates, and every time it has said that the system is up to date. Can you please just make the update available to everyone? If you can't do that, how can I have it made available to mine?

Also, I understand you have only one hardware platform to support. That makes this even more inexcusable. There haven't been major issues reported seeing as you haven't stopped the rollout, don't you think it's about time to get it out to every system? It has been two freaking months!

So the update announced on March 9th is now downloading on my system today, May 14th.  Pretty crazy that it takes over 2 months to get to the end user.  This kind of stuff is what SimpliSafe continually falls down on.

Also, would be nice if the app showed it as an Alert, vs the mailbox indicator.  I missed that for a day.

So I applied it, and my keypad went dead.  Had to remove all batteries, not just one.  Keypad says it has 2.1.4, base has 2.1.18.

It would be nice if a SimpliSafe firmware update went smoothly...

Thanks for the feedback, RickSimplisafe. It's somewhat ironic that part of this firmware update is for making the update experience smoother. But hopefully the next one will go much smoother for you.

As for the timing - we hit a couple of snags shortly after announcing the update and had to pause the rollout, but we had resumed as of April 1st. We do always stagger the rollout a bit so our server doesn't get overwhelmed, and if we catch another unforeseen issue, we can minimize the impact.

However, another part of this latest update gives you the ability to manually request an update when it's available (until now, it just rolled out automatically and you just had to wait for it to be available for you). Power Users will be able to initiate updates on your own schedule, from now on.

I am in the same boat as rushfanrtb. I have been checking on the app and Keypad regularly - the notifications had yet to appear. I had a power outage for two minutes early this morning, and the message to update my software is now showing.

SimpliSafe might wish to duplicate the scenario to see if, for some, that is the only way the update is being made available.

Has anyone noticed a delay with arming and disarming using the keyfob, since installing this update? I installed a couple of days ago (all went super smoothly) but there's a noticeably longer delay between the clicking the fob buttons and the system recognising it.

I don't use the Keyfob, but noticed the app seems slower to respond, not sure if its the app or the base.

However the WiFi is now rock solid, which was our primary concern. FWIW although I do not have an Arris router my WiFi issues seems quite similar to what the problem with Arris was (Very basically lack of 2 separate SSID for 5G and 2.4G confusing the system.) and 2.1 resolved it.

There is a delay in arming and disarming the system with the Keyfob after the update. It is now approximately one second in my case, but it is not an issue for me as long as it is still working (which it is).
this week when the message came out about the firmware update, our keypad went dead. We didn't even have an opportunity to view the keypad and initiate an update. Replaced the brand new keypad batteries, and nothing. I've been on hold for over an hour two different days this week and no one answers. Without the keypad functioning, kind of hard to do anything with our system.

how can we get some assistance to fix this brand new system?

The update went smooth as butter. Thanks for the detailed sticky. I stopped looking for updates years ago and just sit patiently to see a gear appear.

Keep up the great work SS folks!

Hi charlynnesmith,

Sorry about that. Sounds like something unrelated to the update, if you hadn't actually initiated it yet. We've heard that it helps to take out the batteries and leave them out for a few minutes to clear out all the charge, then reinsert.

If the Keypad really just doesn't want to come back online, give our Support team a call at 800-548-9508. They can get you a replacement unit ASAP.

Not a problem, but my system is still listed as espressif on my router. Up to date on all updates.

@g.c.beeson

That may just be what your router has decided to name the connection (i.e. it stuck with the default). Are you able to rename it?
If you disconnect and reconnect, SimpliSafe should appear correctly - but renaming would be easier, of course.
