Firmware 1.5 (January 2020 Update)

Hi folks,

We're happy to announce that firmware update 1.5 is now live. We strongly recommend that you update your Base Station to this version, which includes many important performance and security improvements.

If you've never updated before, here's how:
  1. Make sure you're connected to WiFi
  2. Check that an update is available by heading over to your Keypad and looking for a Gear icon
  3. Press the side of the screen where the Gear icon is, and follow the on-screen instructions

Highlights

User PIN names now show up in the App timeline; the Base Station will now offer to connect to WiFi when it checks for updates; performance improvements and fixes.

Base Station

  • System now offers to connect to WiFi upon checking for updates over cellular
  • Fixed an issue where arming of system via Online Command may not go through, after a recent update
  • Fixed an issue where erroneous entries may be sent to the Timeline event log when the PIN is entered incorrectly
  • Improved "remind me later" feature for over-the-air updates when clicked or restarted
  • Improved flexibility towards WiFi SSIDs in Base Station
  • Performance and responsiveness improvements, including door chime

Keypad

  • Addressed a scenario where Keypad may beep twice on button press
  • Update icon will remain visible on the Keypad screen even after clearing other warnings
  • Fixed issue with changing modes after canceling a Keypad firmware update

Sensors

  • Improved experience for naming Entry Sensors
  • Entry Sensor no longer generates incorrect "low battery' warning after initial setup
  • Fixed possible duplicate or missing "low battery' announcements for Carbon Monoxide Detector and Smoke Detector
  • Fixed an issue with Smoke Detector installation if a Carbon Monoxide Detector is already installed
  • Improved how a smoke alarm reports the end of an alarm

Smart Lock

  • Fixed behavior of Smart Lock upon removing Entry Sensor
  • Ensured correct handling of Smart Lock status updates

App

  • User PIN names now display in app Timeline
  • Addressed duplicate events in the Timeline
  • Addressed issue where incorrect signals may appear on the Timeline when timing out of the Keypad Menu
  • Addressed Freeze Sensor alert on Webapp when sensor is at normal temperature

Lance, whatever the rep said, didn't work obviously - as you know, we have to take our keypads to the base and follow prompts etc to download it.  So I still suggest calling another time when they have more supervisors available, to get the update pushed properly.

DP posted above that the new update has the following version for the base station and the keypad:

Keypad 1.5.6
Base Station 1.5.8

Since owning the Simplisafe 3 system I have updated system I believe three or four times. None of the updates showed on my keypad with the gear icon except the first one with my original SS3 base unit. I was asked to switch out my base when I was working with SS when they had the Verizon issue with the iPhone using the SS phone app. The only way I know that there is an update is seeing here on forum and doing a force update check and sometimes that doesn't work and have to call them to push update, which still does not show with the gear icon.

@johnny M  great post, great information....but will be lost in the forums in a day or two.  You can guess where I am going with this.......should be posted, as all of the updates, in a CRC or at least in the Help Center in a dedicated area.

faure212 - SS rolls out updates in phases (because there are so many customers) - usually, users will get the update notice, as far out as two weeks from the first rollout - if you do not see an update available via your keypad display (or going into "check for updates") within about a week when knowing that others did, call SS, ask for a supervisor, to push the update to your keypad.

Thanks.  My experience with SS customer service is limited, because when I called earlier today I was on hold for 17 minutes before the line went dead.  Calling again produced no response either, so I am NOT encouraged to call again.  But Hope, they say, springs eternal.

sh2402, that happened to me once (I believe it was the second update, it had been two weeks since everyone else updated) - I had to call and have someone push the update - it didn't work the first time, so had to call the next day and have them try again, which worked.  My keypads did NOT have the gear icon after they pushed the update.

The very first update back in 2018, I never had a gear icon, but did have an update available when checking in settings.  In settings, it did prompt to download.  Since then, the last two updates have had the gear icon, as well as the red bell on the dashboard page (the red bell alert used to be unreliable, but I believe SS said they fixed that issue after about the 2nd or 3rd update).

I have version 1.4.20, but my system says it is up to date!  Furthermore, NOWHERE is there a gear icon, although I did find Check for Update.  Pressing it produced the Fake News response: Your system is up to date!
My brand new system recognized ONLY the first motion sensor, and failed to recognize any other sensor after that-- motion, water or entry.  I was hoping that updating the firmware would fix that, but it lies and claims to be up to date.
WHAT IS GOING ON?
NEWS FLASH: By using the TEST MORE I discovered that the Base unit DID connect with the other sensors, but did not tell me about it on the keypad, except for the very first motion sensor.  So things are not as bleak as they looked a little while ago, but why does the system pretend to be up to date?

^ Give it another few days, keep checking your keypad.  By the end of the week, if you haven't seen a notice, call SS - try calling early in the morning when they first open (9am, ET), and pressing #1 for sales, that option seems to get answered more quickly - then ask for a supervisor.

P.S. Another way to determine if you have an update available:   If you have interactive monitoring, on your online control panel, on the dashboard page, there is a little bell to the far upper right - if an update is available, that bell will be red, click on it, and it will give notice an update is available to install.

Hi all,

That's right. The rollout is happening gradually, so not everyone will have it available all at once. You'll know that the update is available when the gear icon appears on the Keypad screen, but you can also force a check by navigating through the Keypad menu:
Menu > System Settings > Check For Updates

Again, it's very important that your system is connected to WiFi, or the update will not go through. If you don't have WiFi at your location, don't forget that you can bring just the Base Station and Keypad to another location to complete the update.

@Captain11 we're working on improvements to the forum, of course. For now, we'll keep posting firmware updates here, so we'll have a record that we can point to when new users join us.

Johnny M. thank you for the firmware update post and follow up post. Maybe in the future you could explain how long the rollout will take to reach all customers.
Customers will then know that by a certain time frame if not received they then can contact SS. Also why do you never post these notifications within the customers account page be it the online account (mail/bell) icon, or phone app?  Why must it always be searching the forum (and search it is) and stumbling over the information. An important message such as this, system firmware update should be posted to the customers account page, online acct and phone app along with the forum page to cover all bases. Thanks for listening to my ramblings.

My online account notifies me. I also get a notice via the app (both will include a red dot on the envelope) and a Keypad gear icon. It has never added Release Notes, but I always know when I have a software update (I just stopped applying them after the second due to a lack of Release Notes - personal choice until now).

I think I was among the first to see the update available and I discovered it on my account page on the website.

Received new firmware update notification on 02/08/2020 on all three devices, keypad, phone app and online account. Thanks Johnny M. for your continued efforts to bring us the information we have been asking for.

Lance, make sure it wasn't missed, because apparently someone tried to push it to you, it didn't work, they may assume it did if you don't tell them :)

Btw, I reluctantly did the update - luckily it went fine, no bricked keypads this time!

I installed the update this morning and my entire system is now shutdown. The update finished a half hour ago and both the base station and keypad are dead.  I've unplugged the. Add station and removed the batteries from the keypad and neither worked.  The call center is closed and I can't find anything on your website.
