Smoke detectors and smoker

I’m thinking of adding a smoke and CO2 detector to our system but concerned since we have a smoker in the family. Does cigar or cigarette smoke set these off?

Hi @Lalbert,

Yes, CO (carbon monoxide) is a biproduct of cigarette smoking, so it would definitely be picked up by the CO Detector.

The Smoke Detector works by picking up any tiny particles that enter the chamber.

However, cigarettes wouldn't necessarily produce a huge amount of either, unless they're a very heavy smoker, or it's a small, un-ventilated room. There's a chance that both detectors could be triggered, but as long as your family member isn't smoking in the same room, and definitely not right next to the detectors, it shouldn't be much of an issue.

@davey_d Thanks for the info.  Maybe I will give them a try....one detector at a time.
