Smoke detector... No built in siren?

Am I right that the smoke detector only sets off the main alarm? It seemed that way when it went off which isn't very safe for occupants.
And do you have to enter a pin to turn the alarm off? We had plumbers in and they had no idea what to do when their solder fumes set the detector off!
