Is the smoke detector just a re-brand?

@stephencoons, I would differ in opinion.  SS goes through many, many hoops, as evidenced on the FCC.gov site, to develop their own equipment, good or bad.  That would include the smoke detector.

It's not a matter of opinion, it's a matter of do they/don't they.

It looks crystal clear to me that it's either a rebrand, or at least uses the same housing, since they CLEARLY come out of the same mold.

As for FCC.gov, I was hoping somebody would wander by that was familiar enough with FCC filings to have looked it up, or at least know where to look it up because my bet is that they sourced their smoke detectors from whoever manufactures the ones at Fry's, and just added a receiver to their base station.

So what is your point?  So it looks alike?  The product you have posted does not seem to do anything extra that the SS smoke doesn't do.

Lots of companies use manufactures that do contract work, so yes, there can be similarities.   Sewing machines come to mind.

I don't think it matters if they OEM some of their gear or not. What we pay them for is integration into the SS system.  So long as the system meets national and local standards, what difference does it make?

The difference is that it doesn't meet local standards for many of us. MANY states, cities, and counties require hard wired smoke detectors for all new construction, rentals, and any time a home is sold.

I realize that whether or not it's a re-brand doesn't directly impact whether or not they offer wired detectors, but if it's a rebrand it absolutely could explain why they refuse to release a compliant product when their customers have been asking for it since day one.

Or, they think their design is superior than what their customers want.

If memory serves, SS started with the intent of offering good security options to renters, so their equipment is meant to be taken along when one moves to a new place. Apart from the doorbell, everything is battery powered and can be moved. Maybe that has something to do with why there's no hw smoke detector?
