I would recommend in a typical home that you clean your Smoke Detectors about once a month. But in your case, it definitely wouldn't hurt to do it more often!

If you twist the unit counter-clockwise, you can unmount it. In the back you'll see grills. A vacuum cleaner around that area should do the trick.
