Outdoor Camera Recording Every 3 Minutes on firmware update 1.18 and 1.20
We are seeing a resurgence in reports of users who are seeing sudden and repeated motion triggers, resulting in a new recording every 3 minutes, and eventually a rapid battery drain for their Wireless Outdoor Camera. These repeated triggers seem to be occurring both during the day, and when Night Vision is activated.
A similar issue was resolved on firmware update 1.10 (November 2022), but users are now seeing new cases after their Outdoor Camera updated to firmware 1.18 (September 2023).
Our engineering team has identified the issue, and a fix is IN PROGRESS. A new firmware update will be rolling out soon to address the issue.
In the meantime, it can help to adjust the following settings for your camera experiencing this issue:
- Change your camera’s motion detection setting to All Motion
- If you have Activity Zones set up, adjust them to also block off the zones around the image that your camera is detecting
- Turn your camera’s sensitivity down to Medium or Low
You can make the above settings changes to your Outdoor Camera in the SimpliSafe mobile app by navigating to Cameras on the bottom navigation bar > select the gear icon in the top right corner > select [your camera] > Motion Detection.

@davey_d I've been having the same issue the other users describe below. Further, once the spotlight comes on (whether it was a phantom trigger or otherwise) it will stay on. Even if I completely turn off motion sensing on the camera through the app, the spotlight stays on and the app continues to notify me that motion is sensed. In other words, the camera is nonresponsive. I have deleted it from the system (which then turns it off) and reinstalled it at least 8 times now over the past several weeks, but that doesn't resolve the problem.

Having the same issue. Performed a reset and reinstalled the camera. Every 3 mins one of my cameras starts recording with no apparent motion.

As stated by ADB75, I changed the motion setting from people only, to all motion. The issue went away.

I've been having the same problems with my outdoor camera. It's been working fine until last week when it started falsely reporting movement every couple of minutes. I took it down, put in a freshly charged battery, cleaned the front if it well to remove any possible dirt, deleted it from the system, added it back to the system and it worked fine for about 3 days. Now, it's worse than it was. I thought it might just be the camera and thought replacing it with a new one would be the answer, but after reading that a lot of other people are having the same problem, I don't think that's the answer. All I can do now is to delete it again from my system and not use it. Very frustrating. Perhaps it's time to find another company.

My outdoor camera started notifying of motion from 8;02-10:01 pm last night ( when I finally just turned off notifications). Nothing is seen in any videos taken. Fortunately it’s plugged in but this is extremely frustrating!!!

Two of my cameras are recording every two-three minutes. For the last two nights, all night. Any fix for this? Fine in day time.

Same issues here, on version 1.20. It's getting annoying to have to keep taking the camera down for 5 hours to recharge the battery only to have the issue happen again. Trying the suggestion to turn motion to all motion and down to medium will occur next, but he battery is dead, again... and it's supposed to rain non-stop tomorrow. Maybe Monday, but I'm suspecting a hardward issue if replacement cameras seem to fix the issue as another user has reported. Maybe I can get Simplisafe to send a replacement?

Recently, one of my outdoor cameras has been recording every two to three minutes after sunset. I couldn't fix it by reducing the sensitivity and it drives me crazy. The videos don't show any motion. Would you mind giving me some advice?

Round 4, recharged battery drained by false detections. Removed camera from system and reinstalled. It ran an “upgrade” that took it back to 1.18.33.5603 From 1.20. Set night mode on, medium sensitivity, all motion, no status light, no spotlight. Supposed to rain all day and night. May be a few days to check back in.
but the fact that it was downgraded indicates a really big issue was found in 1.20 but even so, most reports of this issue are with 1.18.

Update your base station, my bet is you'll get rolled back to 1.18

Yes, this problem is happening on my system. The app says software version 1.20.27.6769.
Two things I have noticed:
1) This frequently (but not exclusively) starts happening when I transition the system from AWAY to OFF.
2) I usually review the videos when this happens. A couple days ago I saw two floating dots of light in the video. I put a towel over the camera. The floating dots went away and the camera stopped triggering.
