Open entry chime options

The next gen 3 software update needs to include the option of having the open entry point device name mentioned from the base station instead of just a chime. I have four doors and I would like to know which one is being opened. I think it's a lot more safer and it seems like it would be simple.

Base Station announce Component or Sensor by name, instead of chime

Thank you for the feedback, rdean. I'll note it for our devs.

Exactly what I want, too. It does this in test mode so I know it can be done.

I'm pretty sure it does this if you choose a name for the sensor from the list but not if you enter a custom name. The system isn't doing text to speech and they can't pre-program a voice for a custom name since it's custom.

Edit: Updated to reflect that my statement is not correct. (Though I would still swear it used to do this...)

@worthing Except that it doesn’t. We have only one sensor we named, the rest were stock.

I also noticed the Base can pronounce the name of an open sensor after we hit the Away button on the Keypad while the sensor is open; i.e., if the man door to the garage is open when the Away button is pressed, the Base voices a warning that the Garage Door is open (it may voice slightly different words).

I just changed the name of one of my sensors with a custom name back to one of the suggested defaults and you are correct, it doesn't announce the name. I would have sworn, and even wagered some money, that it used to work the way I described it. Either my memory is going or something changed. Either way, you are correct.

Plus one on this one!! We've been asking for this for a while now. The system can do this in test mode, so it shouldn't be too hard to make a feature to allow the user to choose which audible alerts play.

Even if it weren't possible for custom-named entry sensors, or if the exact wording couldn't be announced by voice, it would be nice to have different options, so we can at least associate different noises/sounds to each entry sensor.

Just adding this. I often consider other options because of this. I have a two story home. If someone breaks into our basement vs. our main level bedroom, I would love to know at 2am rather than taking the time to open the app find out how to get to opened sensors. If its a life or death situation, I'd like to know where the threat is coming from so I can prepare.

This feature has been requested for years. It has to be the only system out there that doesnt have it. How many features are the teams working on?

@mel_eacd91 I'm not sure I understand what you mean.

If someone breaks in, that would trigger an alarm. If you have Push Notifications enabled, there should be a notification on your phone that states exactly which sensor has been trigged - including the nickname that you gave it.

Davey, no offense to law enforcement, but I am not going to assume the police will get my alert in time. I live in a weirdly designed 2 story home. At 3am I am not looking at my phone and if I hear an alarm, I want to know where the threat is coming from. If they are coming from downstairs, its going to take them 3 to 4 minutes just to get to me (its like a maze in the basement). If the alert is coming from my own bedroom window ( assume I didnt hear the window open for some reason ) I am having to react immediately. We also have an outdoor studio space and if someone is breaking into that, I don't need to go into protection mode.

ADT would tell me which sensor was triggered. Always. Living in the not best neighborhood at the time, that saved me because the alarm triggered and told me what sensor was tripped. It was the outdoor area, which didn't frighten me as much, but let me know where I needed to go. Coming from a deep sleep to an alarm is very difficult and having to think fast doesnt allow me the luxury of checking my phone. If someone is coming at me or my family I am not on my phone. Im looking for a weapon.

I never rely on this system to get the police to me to save my life. Perhaps they will, but Ill never bet on it. Sorry if this comes off as extreme, but ive been in situations in my home where getting information fast has helped me decide what Im going to do.  Also in my home, how do I know my wife is walking in the front door or someone is opening a window in the basement? Again my house is weird and depending on where I am in the house, Ill never know.

@davey_d also, outside of emergency situations, its just damn nice to know who is opening what in the house. Having other systems that do it sure made it nice and I just got use to hearing the chime of what was opened. Also your adhesives are not great and my sensors fall off and its nice to go right to it to find it. Your app is not great either for finding open sensors.

I listed an emergency example above to get more attention to this request. Saying "it sure would be nice" doesnt get attention on the enhancement list vs. this could save lives.

Add me to the list, too! This is a rather annoying oversight.

My sensors don’t even make the chime! I have it to loud but it doesn’t chime at all.

@JAitken the chime should be coming from the Base Station. Do you hear other sounds and voice prompts from the Base Station?

If so, I would be concerned that either your Entry Sensors are not able to properly send signals to your Base Station, or the sensors might not be set up properly and aren't able to recognize when they're opened or closed.

@JAitken@davey_d If you had a separate siren from Simplisafe, you can configure and customize that for those things also (whether or not you have it configured, or want it configured, to make sounds from the Simplisafe base station itself. There may also be some options turned off in the Simplisafe/Simplisafe base station settings, right? You would/should know if the sensor wasn't working, since when you alarm/disarm it should tell you, not to mention in the app you should be able to tell without testing.

Do you have an ETA on the enhancement to allow to choose different sounds for different devices?  I would like to know WHICH door or window is opening based on the sound not having to have my phone near me to read or look it up.

I honestly can’t believe the base station doesn’t say which door just opened, but after poring over the app and reading this thread I’m disappointed to know it’s true.  My 22 year old system did that.  It would announce “Front Door” when the door opened.   Seems pretty basic.

I would also like to be able to hear the announcement from other rooms in the house that are not near the base station.  Did someone say a siren device will also make the announcement when an entry opens?  If the base station is the only thing that can announce, I won’t hear it from some places in the house.  I would also like to hear the sound when the door closes.  Right now, it only chimes (in “off” state) when an entry is opened.  We have always used our old system’s announcements to know when someone has opened *and closed* a door.

Super disappointing that some basic features I thought would be standard are not supported and that people have been asking for them for years in this community.

I was also kinda hoping the open door announcement would be something I could get as an alert in the app if I wanted.   So sorry, but I’m not sure this seems as thought through as I expected it to be.
