More Notification Categories

@SS,

In the Android app the notifications are broken down into:

DFU
Doorbell Ring
Miscellaneous
Downloads
Arming Reminders
Widgets

And we can enable/disable each category, assign unique sounds, etc. but it occurs to me that there are a LOT of things mashed into "Miscellaneous" that deserve their own categories.

Please give us more options ASAP like "Fire Alarm, "CO Alarm" and "Burglar Alarm" which somehow didn't rate their own customizable notifications but "Downloads" and "DFU" did? I want to be able to assign something obnoxious and loud to the the alarms. Maybe even a unique one for each alarm. And I definitely don't want the same noise used for the alarms to be used for "entry opened" and "water sensor" and "secret alert".

Hi all,

An update on this request. The existing functionality is somewhat of a side effect of how notifications work in Android, and not something that our devs set up on purpose. That's why the option exists in the Android Settings, and not within the SimpliSafe app itself. And also why similar functionality is not available for the iOS version of the SimpliSafe app.

As of right now, further functionality in this regard is not in active development. We will keep you updated if and when it is picked up by our engineers.

This has sort of been suggested before but maybe not directly. I also tried looking in the last half year or so of posts on the forum and have not found this exact feature request. There is an overwhelming need for better control of notifications and the notification categories on the Android app. Unfortunately, I don't know if the notification categories are the same on the iOS app.

The current notification categories on Android are "DFU", "Doorbell Ring", "Miscellaneous", "Downloads", "Arming Reminders", and "Widgets". About 99% of my notifications fall under Miscellaneous, which basically groups together every important notification type, including but not limited to smart lock change of state, secret alerts, arming and disarming of the system, and the most surprising, actual alarm events. Considering that the only way to control the notification behaviors and sounds is through the Android system settings, all of these categories should be broken out into their own categories.

Why should we be limited to having actual alarm events have the same notification behavior and sound as a "secret alert" or locking/unlocking of the smart lock? That simply does not make sense. I think that any user would definitely want to be notified in a different way on their phone for an actual alarm event versus the lock changing state or an entry sensor sending a secret alert.

Just my two cents but I think this should be kind of obvious when programming the app.

Thanks for the feedback, julian.benz!

iPhone users unfortunately don't have as much granular control. But I agree, it could come in really handy for Android users to have very different sounds for each event. I'll pass this on to our dev team.

I just saw this was from 2021 - is there any plan to have this done? There's a big difference (to me at least) between a notification for a door unlocked and the security system being disarmed. The system disarmed I always care about and want to set a different notification. But a door unlocked I almost never care about. On Android, they are both listed in the notification category under "Alarm".

As a customer I really need to have each different event type be its own notification category so that I can be notified correctly for each different type. Otherwise I have to choose between over notified or under notified when it's not separate from other events.

And as we all know, too many notifications means that we start ignoring them. With security, this is a bad very place to become complacent.

Great idea, Worthing. And it's also worth noting that the ability to even change notification sounds at this level is only available on Android. I'll forward to our dev team.

Need to be able to change the doorbell chime and system alert sounds directly in the Simplisafe app, just like Ring, ADT, Wyze, Vivnat, and other smart door bells and security systems have this.

To further expand on this, for accessibility reasons, a user needs the option to select between different chime tones. My wife has a genetic hearing loss that specifically affects low tones. The existing chime tone registered with a good amount of bass making it difficult for my wife to hear. Please prioritize this feature

Yea this needs more attention shouldn't even be hard to bring this type of update in

Any updates to this, yet another thread that's over a year old? I can see there's now an "alarm" category in the Android notifications but I can also see that category includes stuff other than, you know, the alarm.

Once again, when might we get a separate category that is ONLY used for when the alarm is tripped and sounds so that we can assign an obnoxious and unique and loud sound to it? It'd be nice to know, without digging into the notifications, if the noise I heard was an entry sensor or the alarm.

I feel strongly that this should be an option, too.  Lumping notifications for serious alarms in the same category as outdoor cameras being triggered, while Downloads and DFU can be assigned unique notification sounds, is ridiculous, and a major disappointment to this new system purchaser.
