Upgrading to the new system

Hello everyone,

I am thinking of upgrading the system to newer legacy 3 system with new entry sensors and all. My question is, will the old fire alarms and Carbon monoxide sensors work with the new system or do I need to replace them too? TIA.

@drarjun_ros short answer is no.  All must be SS3.

Hi @drarjun_ros,

The Captain is correct. The Gen 3 SimpliSafe uses a completely different method of communication, so the sensors for the SimpliSafe Original are not able to communicate with it, and vice versa.

That goes for the Smoke Detector an Carbon Monoxide Detector. They do look very similar between generations, but are very different internally.

Do most people upgrade? I have the original system and want to get another smoke detector but they're discontinued.

@m5189 I had the SS2 system in 2012 and upgraded to SS3 as soon as it was available. No regrets and addresses many of the "holes" in the older system. With price discounts of 50% on SS3 for black friday, it is an excellent time to upgrade. Some of the best improvements: full encryption, the keypad (design compared to SS2 is light and day) and full integration of the auxilary siren, not the Mickey Mouse setup in SS2. Many other improvements but highly recommend you upgrade. Good luck on your decison.

I'm not able to give exact numbers, but yes, a very large chunk of our Original customers have already upgraded - likely taking advantage of our Upgrade program (for at least 50% off a full system order!).

While we still offer customer support for the SimpliSafe Original, we no longer manufacture new components. So more and more components will go out of stock eventually.

But there are more than just that reason to upgrade! The SimpliSafe Gen 3 was built from the ground up with a smarter Base Station and Keypad that can be updated for security and new features, and sleeker sensors that have double range. You can learn more about the benefits of upgradingon our Help center article here.

how long will the old system continue to work (assuming no components fail)?

also can you get another brand smoke/carbon monoxide detector and add it to the existing (old) system?

my smoke detector suddenly stopped working and i'm not currently in a position to upgrade.

@m5189 The upgraded equipment is very nice and has several enhanced features. But be careful!  The upgrade path is somewhat confusing and not at all straight forward.  I recommend contacting support and have them walk you through the process.

There is a place on the website where you can "replace your base station" - this method sort-of works, but I still had to call to get a problem with the PIN straightened out (it needed to be reset for some reason).  The other issue I encountered was trying to use the legacy system as a standalone on another part of my property.  Again, I somehow wound up with both systems on a monitoring plan (which I did not want).  I called and asked to have the monitoring plan discontinued for the legacy so I could use it standalone, and for some reason, whatever she did, it essentially made my legacy unusable - even from the keypad.

I just bought the new system with the Black Friday sale and I am installing it. My question is I would like to try to sell my old system.  Is there something I have to do to reset it to factory settings or something like that when I go to sell it.
