Wifi to Doorbell and Camera

I have a doorbell and the wifi status is given as 'fair' (2 yellow bars).
About a foot away from that I have a wired camera and the wifi status for that is given as 'good' (3 blue bars).

Any ideas as to why this anomaly?

Hi @BrokenParrot

Not sure of how or where your wired camera is set up. (Is it an outdoor or indoor camera that is powered?)
However, there are usually a few reasons this happens and is fairly common.

1. The product itself is different (different Wi-Fi antennas and build) from the new outdoor and indoor cameras. You will usually see better Wi-Fi performance from newer improved products.

2. Barriers and obstructions can have varying impact regardless of distance / space. If there is a wall, fitting, electrics etc that are different in that space, that can also impact Wi-Fi connection.

If you are having issues with your doorbell vs your camera, adding a Wi-Fi extender may help here.

Hi @Sav_SS

Thanks. I should uodate the details although the problem remains.

The issue is with the SimpliSafe doorbell/camera. I said that a 'wired' camera about a foot away, was rated as good. I have, in fact, changed this for one of the battery cameras (which are much better).

This sits just inside the house on a hall cabinet and is, about a foot from the doorbell (on the outside wall of course). The doorbell is not attahced to brick but to the UPVC door frame.

This issue leaves video from the doorbell very 'choppy' more like a series of still images.

I am assuming that the wifi attenna for the doorbell IS inside the doorbell unit itself and not in the junction box or the power supply. But there is no documentation to confirm this...

Thanks for the feedback and update.

It is expected to have some decrease in signal strength once a device has been moved outside the home.
Bricks, doors, insulation, wiring etc all cause an extra barrier for signal to move through, which will weaken it. But there are ways to improve it - adding a Wi-Fi extender for your Video Doorbell to connect could help. Boosting the signal is not always the main aim of an extender, but rather providing a different path for the signal to travel which could have fewer barriers to work through.

You are correct, that the Wi-Fi antenna is inside the actual doorbell.

This article will guide your consideration for a Wi-Fi extender
