WiFi needs

What are the WiFi requirements for a system, ie how many items use the WiFi? I live in a remote area using a mobile hotspot with a fixed device cap.

The system itself does not need wifi and can use the cell chip inside to communicate to the monitoring company but most people hook the system up to wifi as there primary signal and if wifi is down the system will automatically hook up to the cell for back up, you will not be able to receive firmware updates to the system unless you have the system hooked up to wifi. Any cameras from simplisafe have to have wifi to work

Hi @NCBILL  ,

Yep, as mentioned by @lance843 , the main security system (the Base Station, and the sensors) can function on their own. The Base Station can link with Monitoring Service via its own cell connection - which does require a subscribed plan. But if you would prefer not to subscribe for now, the Base Station is the only device that needs to link with your WiFi to enable app controls and notifications.

If you're interested in cameras, each camera does need to connect to your WiFi by itself. Though because rapid video transmission does require lower latency as well is high bandwidth, we wouldn't recommend them for your situation, connecting to a hotspot.

Thanks for the information since I live in the mountains with no high speed cable WiFi or internet of any kind, I think you are saying I can’t use cameras because of the slow WiFi speed?

That’s frustrating I can’t rely on my 45 when I’m not home.

So I have a AT&T hotspot box as my home internet. Can I use that for my system with cameras??

@Dmadison91all of the cameras require the faster and more stable connection of WiFi. And because they need to transmit a lot of data really quickly, they are unlikely to work correctly through a hotspot.

My system does not have a WiFi connection and only operates over an AT&T link.  About a month ago, I noticed I could not arm/disarm the system using the app, which I could do before.  Does it sound like I have a hardware problem?  According to the support page on this website, you need a WiFi connection to remotely control the system.
