Keypad Clicking instead of Beeping

When my keypad starts its AWAY countdown, it beeps  a few times but then starts clicking.  This is a brand new keypad, batteries are full charge, software is up to date.  I have removed and readded the device from my system.  The connections goes between full 3 bars to 2 bars and back and forth, so connected just fine with base station.  Is this normal?  do other people hear clicks instead of beeps?
