We code not scanning for camera installation

I'm trying to install my camera but o can't get past the 'scan the QR code' section. To scan it obviously I have to leave the app, go to my camera and it does successfully scan but it just takes me to a google search results page pertaining to that camera.

Don't leave the app.   it will put the QR code on your phone and then use the camera to scan the code on the phone (still in the app).

Note that this often does not work well.   It appears that if you take a screen shot of the QR code and blow it up a bit, it scans better.

this camera set up is really unacceptable. the QR process does not work, and almost impossible to get any customer or technical support from Simplisafe. It is not the camera - it is the function within your app and should be fixed. There is usually already a QR code present, the scanning function not even actually available, so the "troubleshooting" online is not helpful, as it really isn't the problem. When you click "rescan" it does not actually open to the scanner, there is just some random QR code already sitting in the app and you cannot move past this step. Unable to set up cameras, unable to get technical help.

This is absolutely the problem. There is a random QR code there and the app doesn't even open my camera (the permissions are right, I checked).
Called Simplisafe and after 15 minutes on hold the call magically dropped. Called back and after 30 minutes on hold I gave up. What a joke this company is.

"We're here to help" No. No you're not.

From what I'm reading, I think maybe some of you have backwards what's supposed to happen..

The app doesn't open the code scanner on your phone to scan the QR code decal on the camera, the app puts a QR code on the screen of your phone that is read by the SS camera.

You will be angry with how stupid the solution to this problem is. Why Simplisafe can't be bothered to post the solution here or even the slightest clarification on their help page is just another example of their true attitude toward their customers.

You don't use your phone to scan the QR code on the back of the Simplisafe camera. You use the Simplisafe camera to scan the QR code that displays in the app on your phone.

So simple and yet Simplisafe can't take the minute to post that to their help section.

brion_1,

You beat us to it. We do have a diagram that comes up just before the QR code, that shows the SimpliCam itself scanning the QR code on the phone. We'll feed back to our dev team and maybe we can make that process a bit clearer.

@davey_d No, you need to provide a way to connect a serial number on the back of the camera.  QR code setups STINK.  Explaining them better is not the problem.  <SMH>

@michaeljamesmichaelmurphy apologies, but that's not at all what's happening.

The QR code that is generated from the SimpliSafe app includes information about your WiFi and SimpliSafe account. What you're doing is teaching the camera how to log into your WiFi, and then what SimpliSafe account it should be linked to.

So it's the SimpliSafe camera that needs to do the scanning, not your phone. That's the confusion that the original poster seemed to have been having.

Our newer camera models - including the upcoming Smart Alarm Indoor Camera and the Wireless Outdoor Camera - do use a different connection method where they pair with your Base Station just like the sensors (using the pairing button on the device). It's likely that our future cameras will use the same method as well.

Frustrating experience.    After multiple failed attempts of scanning, I changed the orientation of scanning.    Instead of holding the iphone and camera  vertically, I held them horizontally and bingo it worked first time.   Also, when I finally finished the installation, there is an icon that says "preview".   It told me I was not connected to the Internet.   I exited setup and the camera worked fine.

I had a terrible time scanning the QR codes at first, then I read the advice of enlarging the QR code before attempting to scan it. I did it by taking a screen shot of the QR code on my phone, transferring the screen shot over to my laptop computer, then enlarging it to fill the entire laptop screen before I tried to scan it in. I scanned 3 QR codes easily right away using that method.

This whole QR system is a joke. Every other item all you have to do is push the button and it works flawlessly. The SS cameras can not read a QR code. Called tech support and the say the camera must be faulty, after they asked if I was in a well lit room, is it a foot away, take a screen shot and in large it, use an iPad, move it around slowly so the camera can focus. They send me a new camera, guess what? It wouldn't read the QR code. Absolutely trash. SimpliSafe if you read this you need to go back to the drawing board with the indoor camera, you have a team of really intelligent individuals I'm sure who can work on fixing this problem, the amount of people experiencing difficulty with this is outstanding. If I was the only one I could understand but damn. Sending both cameras back, considering a whole new alarm system.

Zero Stars that's my rating. Zero.
